The father of invention: Dick morley looks back on the 40th anniversary of the plc.Manufacturing Automation. Give a 1-2 sentence summary of each of your sources here: what type of source is it, and what is the main idea? History of the PLC explains why the PLC was invented and the difficulties with using older devices. It also tells how the PLC has changed over the years. The NASA article explains the benefits of using PLCs and how they are used to control and design electronic equipment. The father of invention gives some information on Dick Morley who is attributed with inventing the PLC. It also offers info on how the PLC changed the automotive world. What is your topic and what is its significance? ( For example:
Im going to write about the effects of the new race

track on the local job market for mechanical engineers because Im going to be in this career field in this community or Im going to compare the daily tasks of LPNs and RNs to show how educational level makes a difference in the nursing field. This is important to me because I want to get as much training as I can before I start working.)

Im going to write about the effect of programmable logic controllers on industry because PLCs are used extensively in fields related to electronic engineering and I will be learning about them in future classes.

Do you have a thesis statement yet? Try writing a possible working thesis herewrite a few different versions,
possibilities, to see how it works, and to give an idea of where youre headed with your ideas.

Programmable Logic Controllers changed the face of industry by allowing electronic equipment to be adjusted much more easily, by aiding in the design of these and new equipment, and by making large factories operate more smoothly and efficiently.

What organizational structure do you have in mind? Look at the templates on the Organizational Models handout and see if one of these will work for you (or a variation of one of these). Copy it here. Then, see if you can plug in some basic info (just a word or two, no full sentences needed) as far as what the causes/effects will be or the compare/contrast subjects/traits will be. Cause/Effect Intro Cause: The invention and implantation of PLCs Effect: Allows equipment to be adjusted easily Effect: Aids in equipment design Effect: Makes factories run more efficiently than before. Synthesis Conclusion

Why are you choosing this structural model? What makes you feel that its the best set-up for your ideas, at this point? I am choosing this organizational structure because it allows me to focus extensively on how the cause (PLCs) has affected industry. My effects can either be three aspects of industry that have been affected by PLCs or perhaps three industries themselves that use PLCs today. ReflectHow are you feeling about this essay? What do you like about your topic? What are you hoping to find out/learn through the research process? What do you think the strengths/weaknesses are so far? What are your confidences and concerns? What are your next steps? I feel confident that I will be able to create a well constructed, informative essay from my current information. I hope to learn a good bit about PLCs such as how exactly the y operate, where they are used and some career fields associated with them. Right now Im worried about my topic being too broad. I feel like I need to narrow it down to effects on industry A. With my current topic I could write a decent paper but it may end up just being too general. It may work but as I continue my research hopefully I will find something to narrow my research too. I know there is plenty of information available to me so maybe by finding a more narrowed article I will be able to subsequently narrow my own thesis. Also as I filled in my outline I think I need to focus a little more on its actual effect on industry and not just how they work.
