2009-2010 Library Book Budget

George Manierre Elementary school is located on Chicagos Northside. It has a student body of 506 students. The students are mostly from lower income African American families. The school is currently on academic watch because they have not made adequate yearly progress in reading for three years. In math, the school has not made adequate progress since 2007. The school library was closed for nearly ten years, and has only reopened this school year. The schedule is completely fixed, with many classes having a twice a week library period. The library is not automated, and the librarian is having trouble with space and figuring out what is in the collection.

Roosevelt Middle School is located in River Forest Illinois. It is a 5th8th grade school with a student body of 633 students. The school has a diverse population and only 4% of the student body is from a low income family. The main librarian Flo has years of experience and is only a few months away from retirement. Her assistant is a Dominican student. Roosevelt Middle School is not only making yearly progress, but they are also performing above state averages in reading and math. The schedule is completely flexible. Many of the students have projects to complete and use the librarys resources during lunch and before and after school.

Objective:
To increase the age of the non-fiction collection (100s in the first year) and begin circulating non-fiction. Currently the age of the non-fiction collection (an estimate) is thirty years old which means most of the books are from the late 1970s and the 80s. These books are also not circulating at all.

Tasks

Weed Collaborate with teachers and analyze collection

Resources: 1. Weeding/Collection policy in hand. 2. Funding Persons responsible: 1. Librarian 2. Volunteers

Use book talks and book lists to get students to use non fiction collection. Remind teachers of your purchases to complement classroom learning

1. Currently the catalog is only available on two computers within the library. I think it would be great if they had an online public access catalog on their schools website to go along with the other resources on the librarys webpage. 2. Mrs. Shultes mentioned that she has purchased materials for projects that students no longer do on subjects that are more obsure. I recommend a slow weeding of those materials to replace with other books to increase collections age

Purchase
Time Frame: Each year take on a new Dewey section. 2010-2011 100s 2011-2012-200s 2012-2013-300s, etc.
