Standards and Objectives

Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain. Objective The students will be able to: 3. Cite evidence in The Canterbury Tales to analyze the theme of a specific tale

Rationale

Finding and citing evidence in a text is important skill that students must learn in high school. Although at times it may be difficult to find evidence in a story, students can start to practice how to find evidence through music and song lyrics. Music is a platform that allows people to present a theme to a specific audience, themes that some students might be able to identify or relate to easier. When we hear a song, we might understand what the song might be about, but how can we be sure? Reading between the lines and searching for evidence that will prove our opinion demonstrates thorough analysis of the text. Once students understand how to identify and analyze the ideas and details required to provide concrete evidence, they will be able to tackle more complex texts and draw inferences on what they have read.

4. Materials and Resources Marc Anthony Vivir Mi Vida Song and lyrics (English and Spanish) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYZBULGd7CU Marc Anthony lyrics in English (Attached) Finding Evidence Worksheet (Attached) 5. Instructional Procedure 15 minutes. Silent Sustained Reading

Students will come in with the novels of their choice and their SSR logs. Students will read for 10 minutes independently and silently. Next, students will start a new prompt for their SSR reading and complete it in their log. 15 minutes. Marc Anthony Vivir Mi Vida Teacher will explain the objective for the day, weekly schedule, and provide students with the lyrics to Marc Anthonys Vivir Mi Vida. Students will watch the video with the lyrics shown in Spanish and English. Next, teacher will introduce the worksheet (Finding Evidence) and use the song lyrics to model finding and citing evidence. Teacher will engage students by asking the class to help complete the Finding Evidence worksheet questions. 10 minutes. Finding Evidence Group Work Teacher will tell students to take out the tale they are working on for their film project (The Wife of Baths Tale, The Pardoners Tale, or The Millers Tale). Next, teacher will encourage the students to find evidence in the text they selected (using the worksheet) and explain that song lyrics we just analyzed and the stories they are studying both have evidence that needs to be uncovered. In the worksheet, students will identify the title, theme, what the theme implies, ideas, details, phrases, clues, and five pieces of evidence that prove their opinion about the theme of the tale. Teacher will walk around to each group and check their work. If the groups have completed the assignment correctly, they will receive a signature and will be allowed to continue on to the next phase of the film project. If students have not completed the assignment correctly, the teacher will meet with the groups to go over the information again. 10 minutes. Revising Scripts for Evidence/Script Writing Next, (if students have completed their drafts for the film project) students will use the finding evidence worksheet to check their scripts for evidence about Chaucers theme. Since students have been able to practice finding evidence, they will be able to identify if their scripts

have enough detail and information that addresses Chaucers themes in their selected tales. The teacher will walk around the room to make sure that the students have a good understanding of what they need to do. If students have not completed a script of their draft, students will continue working on their draft and complete the assignment (revising scripts for evidence) for homework. 3 minutes. Closure Exit Slip Students will write an exit slip and respond to the question,What is the theme of your selected tale and write one piece of evidence that proves it. 6. Assessment Students will be assessed on their ability to complete the worksheet on Finding Evidence for their selected tale as well as the exit slips. The worksheets will assess the understanding of the group as a whole and the exit slip will assess the understanding of every individual. 7. Modifications Provide oral directions clearly Allow students to work in groups Provide graphics organizers instead of questions Repeat the objective of the assignment 8. Extension Students will being a dress rehearsal of the scenes that they will film. 9. Reflection:
