Identifying Character Traits- My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother by Patricia Polacco Purpose- For the students to be able to analyze and identify characters internal and external traits by read aloud and activity on My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother by Patricia Polacco. Objectives Students will be able to identify examples of internal and external traits of a character from My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother Students will be able to differ between internal and external traits of a specific character from the story My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother Students will be able to identify internal and external traits of a character from their independent reading

Stage 1: Pre-Reading Teacher will invite students to rug Teacher will begin the lesson by saying, We have been focusing on characters when reading The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes during our Reading Workshop. It is important to understand and recognize the characters to get a better understanding of the story. When we were making our chart about Maddie, Peggy, and Wanda from The Hundred Dresses we were identifying certain traits that we found in the story. It is important to pay close attention, or study our characters just like we did when we were reading The Hundred Dresses. Teacher will write on the white board, What does it mean to study a character? o Teacher will record students responses Teacher will introduce vocabulary, When we study a character we look at internal and external traits. Can someone tell me what they predict internal and external traits means? o Teacher can write on white board students responses Teacher will transition and share the pre-made chart o Internal trait- the characteristics of a person that are found on the inside, the personality of a person, characteristics based on a persons actions Examples: feelings- happy, sad, angry, frustrated o External trait- the characteristics that are found on the outside, what people see, physical characteristics Examples: clothing, hair color, eye color, height o What does it mean to study the character? To look at who the character is To learn about the character Why do they do certain things

What do they look like How do they act What are they thinking o Why do you think it is important to study the character? To learn about the character To help us to understand the characters roles, actions, and reactions Teacher will transition to begin reading read aloud of My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother by Patricia Polacco

Stage 2: Reading Teacher will read enthusiastically Teacher will ask comprehensive questions relating to read aloud

Stage 3: Responding Teacher will ask discussion questions about My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother o Who are the characters in this story? o Who is the main character or characters? o What is the relationship between Treesha and Richard? o Does this relationship change throughout the story or stay the same? o If the relationship changed, what caused the change?

Stage 4: Exploring We discussed how we think agree Richard is the main character of the story. Today we are going to focus on Richards internal and external traits. Teacher will present character web (with Richards picture in the middle of the web) Teacher will model 1 internal trait and external trait of Richard Teacher will ask two students for 1 internal trait and 1 external trait

Stage 5: Applying Teacher will ask students to return to their seats because they will completing their own character web of Richard independently Students will return to their seats Teacher will explain, Use the character web on the board as a reference. After students complete their character webs, teacher will ask for responses to include on class character web- 1 response per table Teacher will share that for homework they will be completing a character web for Treesha Teacher will explain that this week students will be identifying internal and external traits of characters in their independent reading
