According to talk show host Rush Limbaugh, participation in the school lunch program has dropped by thousands of students. Principals report massive waste; students are ditching lunch, and some say they're suffering from headaches, stomach pains, and even anemia. At many campuses, an underground market for chips, candy, fast-food burgers and other taboo fare are thriving (Limbough 1). Pad Thai noodles, jambalayas, and tamales are only some of the new, healthier selections in the lunchroom. Even though the introduction of healthier foods into the school systems was a success, getting students to adjust to the new meal choices has not been. Many of these new meals are completely foreign dishes to students, which is the primary reason students are rejecting them (Limbough 1). Instead of replacing the whole lunch menu with unfamiliar foods, the government should incorporate healthier revisions of familiar recipes such as veggie burgers, baked chicken, and chicken/beef tacos. Stripping away every familiar meal and replacing them with foreign ones is causing students to look to the vending machines for a meal or simply starve, instead of encouraging them to eat healthy. Despite the governments efforts to improve school lunch, there is still uproar from parents and students about what is being served in the lunchroom. It is time for the government to step back and allow some other form of authority, whether it is each individual state or county, to regulate the school lunch menu. If the government continues to feed our students, many children will develop poor eating habits, which in turn will increase the rate of childhood obesity instead of lowering it, which was the initial mission of the Healthy & Hunger Free Act.
