Issues with Technology in Education

Cyber bullying- when internet, cell phones or other devices are used to send or post text or images intended to hurt or embarrass another person Online social interaction- an example of this is sexting or students sending nude pictures of themselves to the opposite sex for attention The digital divide- the separation of those who have access to technology and those who do not

Social Issues

Freedom of speech- the content of the internet is not regulated and, as a result, does contain materials that are inappropriate for children Privacy-protecting student privacy is a critical issues Academic dishonesty- some websites offer services to students so that they can hire someone to write papers for them

Ethical Issues

Copyright- gives the creator exclusive rights for a period of time Fair use guidelines- describe circumstances under which a teacher can use copyrighted materials in face-to-face instruction Privacy-protecting student privacy is a critical issues Acceptable use- the use of technology in a manner that protects students from inappropriate behaviors and information Software piracy- copying software to share with others or installing software on multiple machines when only ONE copy was purchased
