Learning Objective: The students will be able to place key details of a text in the correct order to retell a familiar story. Accommodations: If there are early finishers, they will be able to write out the name of each item that the old lady swallowed. The name of the items will be given on smart board so students are able to spell each item. For the slower paced learners, they will be able to finish during center time or in small groups. Students with special needs will be able to ask the teacher any questions that they may have. The teacher will help the student gain a clearer perspective of the lesson, if needed. Materials: Large pictures of the items the old lady swallowed Anchor Chart Handout with boxes numbered one through seven Handout with pictures of items the old lady swallowed Scissors Glue sticks Crayons Pencils Smart Board Procedures: 1. Begin the lesson by introducing the book, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves by Lucille Collandro and illustrated by Jared Lee. 2. Begin reading the book, stopping to ask questions such as: a. Why do you think the old lady swallowed that item? b. Do you think the old lady will sneeze after eating all the items? c. What item do you think the old lady will swallow next? d. What do you think all these items make? 3. When finished reading the book, as a class, we will go over the sequence of the items in the book. a. Which item did the old lady swallow first? Second? Third? Fourth? Etc. b. The old lady swallowed leaves first, then a shirt, a pumpkin, a pole, a pair of pants, rope, and finally some hay. 4. When finished reviewing what the old lady swallowed, students will be given cards that have pictures of the items the old lady swallowed. Each picture will be from the book and will also have the name of the item. 5. Students will then have to put each card in order from one to eight on an anchor chart. a. The teacher will call out for the first item to be brought up, then second, etc. b. Students will each get a turn to place pictures correctly so this activity will be done four times. 6. When each student has had a turn to place the cards in the correct order, the next activity will be explained. a. Students must place pictures in the correct order to retell key details from the story. b. Students will also be able to draw a picture of the old lady from the book in the middle of the handout. c. If the students finish early they will write out the name of each item. d. The teacher will write the names of the items on the smart board. 7. The students will be dismissed to their desks to work on their activity. a. When finished, they will hand their work in to be looked over.

Activity Analysis: Whole group sequencing of eventsstudents will be able to place items in the correct order as a class. Each student will be given a picture of items the old lady swallowed and will place them in the correct order, getting help from their classmates if necessary. Students will enjoy being able to hold the pictures and seeing the items up close. Technology will not be used in this portion of the lesson because I feel like hands on approach would be best and get the point across better. Individual sequencing of eventsstudents will work individually to show that they understand and are able to retell key details of the story read in class. The students will be gluing objects in the correct order from one to eight and they will be able to draw a picture of the old lady trying to eat the items. The students will enjoy being able to cut pictures out and drawing their old ladies. I will use the smart board to display the different names of the items the old lady swallowed for early finishers.
