In 1975 the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) took the initiative to change their policing practices from preventative policing to Community-oriented policing. The reasoning behind the switch was to put more accountability on individual officers to better evaluate performance as well as believing this will better meet the needs of the community. The SDPD received a grant to conduct an experiment on the effectiveness of Community-oriented policing. The experiment involved two sets of police officers, one with community policing training and the other without, who dealt with similar problems and were tested on their responses, attitudes, and behaviors.
