Sydnie Jordan Professor Alicia Bolton ENG 101 5 November 2013 Annotated Bibliography passengers believe the airplane they are flying on is securely safe.. Even though the plane was rather tall,., all persons aboard AeroPeru Flight 603 would have lived. Many other faulty mistakes have occurred in airlines such as Flight 603. If one very important task was left out of the preflight inspection in AeroPerus Airline, such mistakes can occur on other airlines. One of the major causes of these errors is the fault of the maintenance crew. Although, there are hundreds of flight crew members that do an excellent job daily. The maintenance crews are sometimes understaffed, poorly trained, poorly supervised, or careless when they are pressured to quickly complete the preflight inspection of a plane. My research paper will emphasize the importance of the maintenance crew being thoroughly trained to inspect every part of the plane, including the top, before takeoff. My research paper will be based on this bibliography. Carmody, Douglas. Airplane Maintenance and Repair: A Manual for Owners, Builders, Technicians, and Pilots. New York. McGraw-Hill. 1998. Print. Douglas S. Carmody wrote this manual for use by both professional and amateur airplane maintenance. This manual contains detailed step-by-step instructions for the inspection and repair of every part of a plane, from the electrical system to the pilots log books. Each chapter contains numbered steps to correct any faults. For example, the chapter

five Repair of Hydraulic Systems: Including Wheels and Brakes (Carmody 173). This chapter contains details on air filter replacement and then on replacing air filters. This very technical manual includes charts, diagrams, and pictures. Douglas Carmody is well qualified to write a technical manual on the inspection and repair of airplanes. He was an airline captain with USAirways, a flight instructor, an A and P mechanic, and a flight training school instructor. Although the book was copyrighted in 1998, some basic inspections and repairs he explains are still relevant today. Since I am writing about airline mechanics and pilots preflight lists, this manual gives me some understanding on the importance of checking even small details. My research is about the problems with airline mechanics: time limits, the overloading of their jobs, and the lack of adequate training. This manual is very technical, but it gives me an idea of how extensively the airline mechanic must be trained. The training should be done by a trained instructor, not another mechanic who is a part of the same crew as the trainee. Dekker, Sidney. Ten Questions about Human Error: A New View of Human Factors and Safety System Safety. Lawrence Erlbaum 2005. eBook Collection (EBSCOhost). Web. 2 November 2013. Professor of human factors and system safety at Lund University, Sidney Dekker, wrote the book Ten Questions about Human Error: A New View of Human Factors and Safety System Safety. Dekker tells how technology changes have given rise to human factors and system safety. Along with this, he goes on to say how efficient system safety is no longer efficient if it does not meet the demands of what is happening around us today. One distinct point he makes is if we in human safety keep doing what we have been do ing, simply because it worked in the

past, we may become one of those systems that drift into failure (Dekker xv). He goes on to say that we must adapt to cope with the many possibilities of human factors. This book was published nine years ago, in 2004. A lot of time has passed since then, and it is sad to say not much has changed since then. Dekker is a very credible source for his groundbreaking work on human error and safety. He has written other books on human error such as The Field Guide to Understanding Human Error (2006), Drift into Failure (2011), "Patient Safety (2011), Just Culture (2012), and his latest book Second Victim. He is also an airline pilot and flies the Boeing 737 as a part-time airline pilot. Due to his experience, he is a very well-rounded trustworthy source. Since I am writing about the evaluation of airlines preflight inspections, this book will be an incredible addition to my research. Dekker makes many good points that I can incorporate in my paper. His recommendations and many great points can be used in my paper to help explain the seriousness of maintenance safety. Katel, Peter. "Future of the Airlines." CQ Researcher. 7 Mar. 2008: par. 47. Web. 4 Nov. 2013. In Future of the Airlines, Peter Katel evaluates developments and needs of improvement in the airline industry. Katel includes various summaries of other articles. Mitchell states there is a deep problem with the FAAs incapacity to ensure supervision of increased maintenance outsourcing. He goes on Katels article includes various summaries of other articles on the improvement and developments in the airline industry. Through his research, he has done a thorough examination of both improvements and other things that need improvements. Katel is credible

because, inside his article, hes gathered many opinions from a variety of experienced people in the airline industry. This article will be very useful for my research paper. It contains many opinions and statements made by influential people. I can use their varied opinions to seem more openminded. Through the opposing views, I can make my paper more convincing by using these articles for my counterargument. Wald, Matthew L. Poor Airplane Maintenance Is Said to Have Led to Crash. The New York Times. 27 Feb. 2004. Web. 2 November 2013. The major points emphasized in Matthew Walds article are the need for reorganizat ion of airline mechanics and better supervision of their work. He summarizes the commuter plane crash in Charlotte, NC in January 2003. This crash was caused by mechanics that were not fully trained. In fact, the mechanical procedure was described as the entire system here was a breakdown situation (Wald, par. 2). The second plane crash analyzed was the crash of an Air Midwest flight. This plane was not only overloaded, but had mechanical errors in the cables that controlled the tail of the plane. According to the National Transportation Safety Board ruling, there was no requirement for the mechanical system to be tested or that outside contractors of the mechanical work are supervised. This article is a credible source written by Matthew L. Wald, a frequent contributor of the NY Times. Mr. Wald presents credible details on the crashes of the two planes. He also presents rulings of the National Transportation Safety Board. Although this article was written eleven years ago, the article justifies that the performance of the maintenance crews have yet to improve.

My research paper will be emphasizing the failures of airplanes mechanical crews. This article provides details of two plane crashes that were caused by mechanical failures. I will use the information in this article to show how important it is to have very well trained mechanics and to stress the importance of a full preflight inspection before a plane leaves the runway. Worsnop, Richard L. "Airline Safety." CQ Researcher. 8 Oct. 1993: par. 18. Web. 4 Nov. 2013. Richard L. Worsnops article contains a series of other article summaries that conclude airplane maintenance crews have cut corners in airplane safety. Leo Janssen, president of the Aviation Safety Institute, writes its just a matter of fact that if a company is spread too thin, it tries to scrape by with the least amount of effort to ensure a good, safe airline ( Worsnop, par. 18). Worsnop concludes through the series of articles that human error is the cause of most airline accidents. Worsnops database article tells of many articles to prove that he has researched the many causes of airplane crashes. For example, he quotes Nader who wrote in 1993 that flying is not safe enough and seems to be getting worse. Worsnop has done a thorough research of numerous articles, proving that he is trustworthy. This article can be useful in my research paper because it cites studies done by National Safety Boards and experienced aviation experts. I can use this research in developing reasons to support my research on the importance of competent maintenance crews. Due to the numerous studies cited, I can develop a more thorough and better-rounded argument for my paper.
