1) Childhood Started watching monster movies before he could walk or talk. Fascinated with the classic horror films of Roger Corman. Watched films where Vincent Price played the villain. Enjoyed Japanese monster movies. He identified with the monsters as many of them were different and outsiders. His childhood was similar to Victor, the protagonist in Frankenweenie. He grew up in the suburbs feeling isolated and with emotionally-distant parents and a beloved dog. He was bullied and describes himself as, a bit depressed. Spent a lot of his free time hanging out in graveyards. 2) Education Attended California Institute of Arts on a Disney scholarship. Majored in animation. While at CalArts, he made the short film Stalk of the Celery Monster. Upon graduation, he worked as an apprentice animator for Walt Disney Studios 3) While at Disney He worked on films such as The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, and Tron. He made the short film, Vincent, which paid tribute to actor Vincent Price. Burton made another short titled Frankenweenie. Disney felt this was too dark and scary for children. After less than one year at Disney, he left (or was fired) as he felt he was bad at their form of animation. Cute and cuddly four legged creatures werent his style. 4) On His Own Impressed with Frankenweenie, actor Paul Reubens asked Burton to direct Pee-wees Big Adventure. Went on to direct Beetlejuice. Film movement that emphasizes on the expression of inner thoughts or emotions through the control of stylistic elements; notable for their dark themes of insanity, horror, death and fatality that translate prevalently into the films mise-en-scene and narrative. It counters the principle of realism and practices extreme distortion as means to communicate inner emotional reality. Monochromatic effect muted filter that emphasizes blood throughout the film. Burton saturates it with blood and death; loosely based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820). Burton reimagines Irvings doomed schoolmaster Ichabod Crane as a city-based detective with a fervent devotion to both science and the power of deductive reasoning. Feature of Gothic horror is the claustrophobic fear that there is no escape. Burton paid homage to the horror films of the English company Hammer Films. Was also a turning point for Burton. Along with change in his personal life (separation from actress Lisa Marie), Burton changed radically in style for his next project, leaving the haunted forests and colorful outcasts behind to go on to directing Planet of the Apes. Sleepy Hollow treads a fine line between humor and horror.
