Teacher Candidate: Griff Sims Lesson # __2____ Subject/Grade: U.S. History/11th Date and Time of Lesson: 11/7/2013 Learning Objective: When given a PowerPoint presentation and lecture of urbanization in America the students will be able to identify three things they learned from the presentation. Alignment with Standards: Standard USHC-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the industrial development and the consequences of that development on society and politics during the second half of the nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. USHC-4.5: Explain the causes and effects of urbanization in late nineteenth-century America, including the movement from farm to city, the changing immigration patterns, the rise of ethnic neighborhoods, the role of political machines, and the migration of African Americans to the North, Midwest, and West. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: This lesson is developmental appropriate because it has students work in groups, and requires them to pay attention for approximately 45 minutes. Similar to an English class students will have to complete a K-W-L chart on the content of the lesson. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre assessment: The students will be asked to complete the K and W sections of their K-W-L chart. During assessment: The students will be monitored as they take their own notes throughout the PP presentation and lecture. The PP guides their note taking by having major topics bolded. Post assessment: The students will complete the L section of their K-W-L chart, to show what they learned from the lesson.
Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Use of Formative Assessment This data will help me to determine if the teaching methods I used in this lesson were effective or ineffective.

The students will be able to identify three things they learned about urbanization in America from the presentation.

The students will complete the L section of their K-W-L chart, to show what they learned from the lesson.

Accommodations: The lecture will aid audio learners, the video will aid visual learners and the bolded sections in the PP will aid the students in taking efficient notes on the lesson. The exit ticket is the L section of the students K-W-L chart. The L section will help the teacher see if students understand and followed along through the lesson. The teacher will keep students on task by paying close attention to when individuals and groups finish. This is to make sure students remain focused and on task.

Materials: The materials needed are the PowerPoint, a quick video on Ellis Island, and copies of a K-W-L chart for assessment purposes. Students will need a pencil, and paper. Procedures: 1. Class will begin by having the students complete the K and W sections of their chart. They will be asked the questions, What do you already know about Urbanization in the early 1900s? and What do you want to know about Urbanization in the early 1900s? 2. Next they will discuss with a partner, sitting close to them, what they wrote down.

3. Then the teacher will have a group discussion, by asking the class what they wrote down and discussed. 4. Next, the teacher will begin the PP presentation and lecture on urbanization of America in the early 1900s. 5. Throughout the PP presentation there are questions such as: What are some problems farmers are dealing with during the late 1890s and early 1900s? Why do you think immigrants came to America? What was interesting about the video? Did you learn anything? What is Nativism? 6. Also in the PowerPoint we will analyze a primary source that discusses an immigrants perspective of Ellis Island. 7. Once the presentation is over I will ask students to complete the L section of their K-W-L chart. I will ask them to write at least three things down they learned from the lesson. Activity Analysis: (must show use of TWS 1 data)
1. The PP presentation will be used to present information to the students about Urbanization in American cities. The PP utilizes primary sources, videos, questions, and pictures to aid learners and keep their interests. 2. The K-W-L chart will be utilized to help the teacher see what kind of previous understanding the students have about the subject. The W section will help the teacher know what questions the students may have or may want to learn about Urbanization in America. Finally, the L section will help the teacher analyze how well students paid attention to the PP presentation and what they learned from the lecture.
