Darryl Plummer Post Lesson Reflection (28-30 October 2013) 1. To what extent were lesson objectives achieved?

(Utilize assessment data to justify your level of achievement) Daily Objectives: Students will be able to (SWBAT) Identify the common currency of Europe Define what the European Union aims to achieve Place language groups in their correct location geographically Define key vocabulary

I used the first day primarily as a housekeeping/review day. I had quite a lot of papers that needed to be handed back and poster board projects that were cluttering up the room. Due to the nature of this week (late start 35 minute periods on Wednesday), I wanted to do a quiz on Wednesday rather than a lesson. However, giving the students 2 full days to work on 12 words for the vocab quiz seemed like it would lead to trouble by the end of the period on Tuesday. So, I spent the first 25-30 minutes going over the schedule for the week, having students hand back papers, and explaining that the pretest they were getting back could be used as a study guide for the final test. After that, I used the pretest as a springboard for review. Specifically, most students did not put anything down on the pretest for name 4 things you already know about Europe. I listed off quite a few, and then started quizzing the class on what parts went into which theme of geography. I thought this went really well because students were able to put the different aspects in their proper theme (and I noticed cobwebs being shaken off too). They also argued with each other here and there over which fact went into which theme, which I think is a good sign. With the 15 minutes left, I handed out the vocab sheets for students to begin working on. All but 2 got an A on the quiz. 1 didnt because he habitually does not study or deal well with due dates. The other is generally very on top of things, but in this instance missed the quiz on Wednesday and ended up taking it on Friday after school. I think this is the reason why she didnt do as well as she could have. This indicates that objective 4 was met. I think that the other objectives were met to some degree just by students knowing the key vocabulary, but since half were gone when I went over objectives 1-3 in depth, I think their knowledge of this will be shaky at best.

2. What changes, omissions, or additions to the lesson would you make if you were to teach again? I made one glaring mistake, although at the time I didnt have the information to act correctly on it. On Day 2, about half of the freshman (and half of my class) went to a health and wellness activity fair and will not be in class. If I had known this (the email was sent at the end of the day), I would have spent a

Darryl Plummer little less time reviewing and gone directly into my lecture on the vocab words on Day 1. I normally give students some time to work on the vocab before I go over some of the trickier terms or how they fit together. However, since half of the class will miss it tomorrow, it would have made much more sense to just do that on Day 1. 3. What do you envision for the next lesson? (continued practice, reteach content, etc) Despite half the class being gone on Day 2, I continued as planned with my lecture. Students know that in my class, if they miss a day but know about a due date or assignment, it is still due that day. The only downside is that I was going to use these key terms as a springboard into the European Union and Basque separatism later in the week and next week, but I think I can just go slower then and it will work out. Also, 3 students came after class to get a quick rundown of the terms they were less familiar with, lessening the total impact of half the class being gone Day 2.
