Mary-Allison Mackell Intro to ELL Prof. Reilly 9 December 2013 ELL Live Lesson 1.

What was your objective in this lesson. Do you believe you achieved the objective? How do you know? A. The objectives of this lesson were: a. SWBAT compose their own poem using at least two of the components of a poem. b. SWBAT identify the pattern structures of rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration in poems for children B. I believe that Viviana and I did achieve the objective of this lesson. By the end of the lesson Jack was able to identify the rhyme and alliteration in a poem. I think that his prior knowledge of poetry really helped him understand how poems are different from other types of writing, such as stories. He was also able to write his own poem using examples of both rhyme and alliteration. Towards the end of the lesson it was apparent that Jack would achieve the second objective; however, we were concerned that he would not be able to write a poem with an example fo alliteration and rhyme. However, he proved us wrong! We know that Jack achieved both objectives to an extent because he identified examples of rhyme, and alliteration in the two poem and was able to write his own poem with an example of rhyme and alliteration.

2. The goal of the lesson was to challenge the students language development. Do you feel that you challenged him in this regard? How do you know? a. I believe that Viviana and I did help to develop Jacks language by having him write a poem about Winter using examples of rhyme and alliteration. I think the assignment was a perfect stretch for him given that he had some difficulty, at first, coming up with two words in the poem that rhymed without having it change the meaning of his poem. These were all based our observations of working with Jack. After some scaffolding Jack was able to complete the objective of the lesson. 3. Was there a part of the lesson you realized was too difficult or easy? Was there a part of the lesson you felt did not work the way you wanted to. What adjustments would you have made if you could give this lesson again? a. I think that the part of the lesson that was most difficult was the poem. While Jack did write a great poem, Viviana and I had to push him a little to include two words that rhymed. I think the lesson would have been more effective if Viviana and I gave Jack a list of words that rhymed and that also had to do with Winter. Then we could have asked Jack to write a poem about Winter that also included some of these words. 4. I realize that communication is not an issue since they were both English Speakers. If you were to repeat this lesson with an ELL student what would you have done differently?

a. If I were to repeat this lesson with an ELL student I would have given the student a poem with words missing (cloze passage) and then ask him/her to fill in the missing blanks with either examples of alliteration or rhyme. That way the ELL student would not be overwhelmed with the task of having to write his/her own poem.
