McCall Andrus November 19, 2013 Taking Sides Assignment Biology 1090 Section 006- Human Biology 1) The

major thesis of the yes side is that there has been some major progress made in the War on Cancer; and that so long as we continue in the way we have been going with research, and methods of treatment it is very possible that we will be able to eliminate it in the coming years. 2) The major thesis of the no side is that there have been hardly any new breakthroughs in the War on Cancer. That although we do have ways of screening, and treating forms of cancer. There is really no effective way, and we still do not really know all that much concerning the issue of cancer. 3) Fact #1: That tobacco is a major cause of cancer, and if we strive to eliminate the use of it we can more easily eliminate cancer. Fact #2: As we have used treatments in the U.S. for cancer, and have seen the success in treatment/prevention of cancer. We can see the same results as we try to spread these things around the world. 4) Fact #1: That there really are no proven facts concerning cancer. Fact #2: Most treatments (excluding surgery) are not smart treatments. 5) Opinion #1: That if we spread state-of-the-art cancer care and control at a community level we should be able to save up to 75% of cancer patients. Opinion #2: That we need to promote prevention of cancer nationwide. If we do this it will help with the end goal. 6) Opinion #1: That as a whole we do not understand the main causes of cancer. We understand some causes, but not why they are causes. Opinion #2: That testing on animals is not adequate proof of treatments for cancer. 7) Because cancer tends to strike and kill in the prime of ones life, its human and economic impact is difficult to exaggerate. I think that this is a misleading statement because in many of the cases that you hear about cancer it is concerning either those of a young age or an older age. Yes you do hear of those that impact those that are in the prime of ones life as the article says. But I dont think that it impacts as many people who are in that time of their lives as the article leads us to believe. 8) The incidence and death rates from cancer of the stomach have fallen dramatically since 1930. The reason is unknown but may be due to changes in food preservation; it is not due to treatment. I think that this is a misleading statement because with them saying at the end that it is not due to treatment you have to wonder how they know this? They have not given any statistics or evidence to prove that it is not because of the treatment, and that it is because of the food preservation. 9) The type of argument being made on the yes side is logical. Example #1: For the majority of the article they use evidence that tobacco is a cause of cancer, but they never provide any statistics. Example #2: They also use the example if two organizations work together that will further the effort to eliminate cancer. But in this also they never state any statistical evidence.

10) The type of argument being made on the no side is factual. Example #1: They specifically have a table based on the type of cancer, and the evidence for prolongation of life while having it. Example #2: All of their examples/opinions have been based on research that is shown throughout the article. 11) After reading this article I more so agree with the no side. Although I do feel that the yes side did make some valid arguments. I feel like the no side had more to back their argument up. While the yes side just seemed to state their opinions of what should happen, and how they felt like it should be being done. But they didnt really give any evidence that it was happening. 12) The no author impressed me the most with their findings. 13) There could be many reasons why the yes author relied more on unsupported date. Although I do not feel they had a hidden agenda. I think that they really do believe that the War on Cancer is being won, and that if they had tried to show through statistics to prove their point they wouldnt have had very much to back them up. Although I dont necessarily agree with that. I do think that there have been many discoveries made in the past few decades that have had a major effect, and can very possibly lead to us winning this war. But I do not think that we are quite as far along as the yes author seems to believe.
