Connor Kokott GEOG 1300 10/16/13 Current events article 2 The article I have chosen reveals that a boat

carrying African migrants has sunk early this October. The boat was traveling in the Mediterranean Sea near the Sicilian island of Lampedusa. The reason for the boat sinking is due to a signal fire using a blanket to signal their position. However, gasoline soon became part of it and it caused everyone on the boat to panic. Unfortunately, this panic is what led to the sinking of the boat, killing at least 94 people, and leaving 250 unaccounted for. When I first read this article, I immediately thought of the fire drills in the United States education system. It seems crazy to me that someone would make a big enough fire while on a boat in the middle of the sea. The migrants should have had the common sense that fires are dangerous on land, let alone on a boat. It only got worse when I found out there was gasoline present near the fire. I think it should be known to everyone that gasoline is extremely flammable. If this were to have been taught, then this tragic event would not have occurred. It makes sense to me why they were seeking a better life in a new country. If they would have just received the education needed to keep them alive in a situation like this or the common sense to prevent it, they would have made it. I just hope that the survivors learn from this experience and can teach it to others throughout their lives.
