Grade Level: Second Grade Arizona State Standard that Lesson will Address: Common Core Standard: 2.L.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade two reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies; a. use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase. NCES-S Standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation a) Students will be able to create original Prezi slides for group definitions of selected vocabulary words. 2. Communication and Collaboration

a) Student will be able to collaborate with each other to publish Prezi slides with definitions and video or animation 3. Research and Information Fluency a) Students will be able to locate correct vocabulary word information through various websites and sources 4. Technology Operations and Concepts a) Students will be able to learn new technology of Prezi and how to use its features to create study materials.

Student Learning Outcomes:


Students will be able to define unknown words with multiple definitions Students will be able to use multiple web based sources to implement within their definitions to help add visual stimulus.

Students will be able to work in small groups to create their own personal Prezi slide for studying purposes.

Students will share their knowledge within a small group to be able to create their own personal Prezi slide for studying purposes.

Planning: Teacher will open up with a whole group activity of watching BrainPOP video on Thanksgiving. This BrainPOP will help get the students engaged and ready for the lesson plan of reading their class text on Perky Turkeys Perfect Plan. The students then will split into small groups of 3 or 4. The instructor will pass out a Perky Turkey text to each

group along with a vocabulary word that they will be looking for while they read. The students will be given 30 minutes to popcorn read the text Perky Turkeys Perfect Plan and complete a graphic organizer. The graphic organizer is a tool to help students visually see techniques to determine the meaning of their given vocabulary word. The objective is to reinforce the students ability to identify vocabulary words in sentences so they can understand what the word means in its correct context. We will explain to the student that having a strong vocabulary is important throughout their lives and that it helps their ability to write well structured sentences. Upon finishing the story and graphic organizer the students will continue to work in their groups to create a Prezi on their vocabulary word. They will be instructed that their Prezi will need to include the sentence that the word was used in the book, definition of vocabulary word, several pictures to help describe the word, and another new sentence using the vocabulary. The definition of the word will come from what they gathered from the context clues as well as what they have found using the internet safe search. Teacher will give students time to look through Prezi and then spend some time showing the class the basics to creating their slide. The teacher will be available to help the students at all times. The students will have a week in class to work with their group members to complete the Prezi. The following week each group will present their Prezi to share with the whole class. The Prezi is the students capstone project and it will be graded based on how well the meet the project guidelines. The rubric can be found in the Student Activity Guide through Google Sites.

Formal and Summative Assessment: 4

For the summative assessment the students will create a Prezi as their Capstone Project. They also will share their Prezi with the class to display their skills and vocabulary word they were given. This will allow for the teacher to verify the knowledge and skills learned during this lesson. A rubric will be used to assess how well the students achieved the goal of defining their vocabulary word creatively through the Prezi. Our formative assessment will be given an individual class vocabulary quiz. After each group presents their Prezi on their vocabulary word the students will be given the vocabulary quiz on all words

Learning Theories: This lesson plan will encourage and promote students to exercises their cognitive learning skills. Throughout the whole lesson the student will be using various strategies to process and construct their personal understanding of the content presented to them. In the beginning of the lesson they will be having to use their lower order of thinking skills when they connect past learning of already known vocabulary words. They then understand how they can use those already known words to figure out new words within a passage. When they are given the vocabulary word they are able to apply their ability of using context clues and personal knowledge to process and analyze what the word could mean. They also can use the graphic organizer to help break down all techniques to discover the meaning. Once they discover the definition they will create a Prezi to connect to their higher order of thinking. This step of creating a Prezi will allow the students to have a visual of the new learned word, thus helping it to become part of their long-term memory.
