Outline Prescribed question: How does the text conform to, or deviate from, the conventions of a particular genre? Title of the text for analysis: Slaughterhouse 5, Kurt Vonnegut, 1972 Part of the course to which the task refers: Part 3: Literature texts and contexts My critical response will: Identify the conventions of the science fiction genre Identify times when the author deviates from those conventions Analyze why the author does that, the effect it has on the text, and how that relates to the authors intentions. 1. Introduction 2. Body 2.1. Conventions of Sci-Fi 2.2. Conformity to Convention 2.2.1. Inclusion of aliens and futuristic technology, partially set in a spaceship 2.3. Deviation from Convention 2.3.1. No sense of good and evil 2.3.2. Largely set in the real world portraying real events. Use of aliens does not change earthly sequence of events to a significant degree. 2.3.3. Also, world does not parallel some real world political system, it describes what is without metaphors. 3. Conclusion
