1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. If A B and B C, then A C If M N then N M If m1 =80 and m1 = m2, then m2 = 80 Transitive Property of Congruence Symmetric Property of Congruence Substitution Property of Equality

Aim 12/10/13
How do we use some properties of parallelograms? How do we use parallelograms in everyday life?

Parallelogram Mounts

Definition
Parallelogram a quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides parallel.

Theorem: Opposite Sides

If a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, then its opposite sides are congruent.
Q P
PQ RS

R S

and

SP QR

Theorem: Opposite Angles

If a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, then its opposite angles are congruent.
Q P S R

P R and Q S

Theorem: Consecutive Angles

If a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, then its consecutive angles are supplementary.
Q P S R

mP + mQ = 180, mQ + mR = 180, mR + mS = 180, mS + mP = 180

Theorem: Bisecting Diagonals

If a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, then its diagonals bisect each other.

Example 1
FHGJ is a parallelogram. Find the unknown length.

JG= JK=

F K

5 3

J G JG = FH (opposite sides of a parallelogram are )

JG = 5
JK = HK (diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other) JK = 3

Checkpoint 1
PQRS is a parallelogram. Find the angle measure. mR = Q R mQ =
65

mR = 65 (opp. angles of a parallelogram are ) mQ = 180 - 65 (consecutive angles are supp.) mQ = 115

Checkpoint 2
ABCD is a parallelogram. Find x.
A D

3x

120

3x + 120 = 180

3x = 60
x = 20

Example 2 (Lets do it together!)

Given: ABCD and AEFG are parallelograms Prove: 1 3

Example 2 cont.
Statements
1.ABCD and AEFG are s 2. 1 2, 2 3 3. 1 3

B 3

Reasons
1. Given 2. Opposite angles of a parallelogram are congruent. 3. Transitive

Summarizer
Name 5 properties of parallelograms
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. opposite sides parallel opposite sides congruent opposite angles congruent consecutive angles supplementary diagonals bisect each other

Summary
As we watch the video, you should be taking notes. After taking notes, you should compile your notes into a four-sentence summary. We will share the summaries with the class.
