Puzzle Cube Design Brief

Taking an idea you have and transferring it from a concept to a sketch, to working drawings, to models, and then to a working prototype is a very rewarding process. This project is going to take you from concept design work to final production of a product! You will begin with hand sketches and move on to production drawings on the computer. You will then use these production drawings to build your own puzzle block! Problem Statement: A local office furniture manufacturing company throws away tens of thousands of scrap hardwood cubes that result from its furniture construction processes. The material is expensive, and the scrap represents a sizeable loss of profit. Design Statement: Fine Office Furniture, Inc. would like to return value to its waste product by using it as the raw material for desktop novelty items that will be sold on the showroom floor. Design, build, test, document, and present a three-dimensional puzzle system that is made from the scrap hardwood cubes. The puzzle system must provide an appropriate degree of challenge to a person who is seven years of age or older. Constraints: 1. The puzzle must be fabricated from 27, hardwood cubes. 2. The puzzle system must contain exactly five puzzle pieces. 3. Each individual puzzle piece must consist of at least four, but no more than six hardwood cubes that are permanently attached to each other. 4. No two puzzle pieces can be the same. 5. Every puzzle piece must be at least 2 cubes deep / wide / high in each dimension (can not lay flat regardless of how you turn it). 6. The five puzzle pieces must assemble to form a 2 cube. 7. Puzzle parts should interlock. Required Deliverables: Isometric / Oblique sketches (by layers) of two possible complete Puzzle Cube designs (include annotations) Decision Matrix Multi-view drawings of each puzzle piece (with overall size dimensions) CAD pictures showing at least two different 3D views of the assembled puzzle Photo(s) of your building process and puzzle prototype Design Process Outline: Based on your experiences during the completion of the Puzzle Design Challenge, what is meant when someone says, I used a design process to solve the problem at hand? Explain your answer by aligning each step in this project to the appropriate design process step and type up a simple report that discusses this alignment and the importance of following a design process. (Daily Logs and Reflection in Journal (with appropriate journaling norms) will be assessed separately as daily grades) (Portfolio Documentation from Project will create portfolio and puzzle documentation in class for a separate grade)

Penciling Techniques

Shows good line quality (Fairly straight and of the correct line weight) Most elements sized correctly and communicate the design in an acceptable manner Color appropriately applied and does not take away from image Selects an appropriate concept and is somewhat able to justify the choice using marginally acceptable criteria in a Decision Matrix

Proportion and Scale

Color

Color appropriately applied and enhances the image Selects most appropriate concept and clearly justifies the choice using the appropriate criteria in a Decision Matrix

Lines feathered, curved, converged, or are hard to identify Elements have no Elements close to relationship with the correct each other and relationship with detail is difficult to some distortion ascertain Color applied but Color detracts from does make the visual the three appearance of the dimensional image object pleasing to the or is incorrectly eye applied Selects concept using inadequate criteria OR No key is provided Does not properly format the Decision Matrix

Selection of Final Design

* If a grading topic is not attempted at all, no points will be accumulated for that topic. MAKE SURE YOU GET A PEER TO TEST AND SIGN OFF ON YOUR WINNING DESIGN BEFORE MOVING ON! DOCUMENT THIS TEST. IT WILL BE A SEPARATE GRADE.
