STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING-II(STEEL) DESIGN & DRAWING
(Civil Engineering)

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks:80

Answer any ONE question form Part A and THREE from Part B
Use of IS code is permitted
___

PART A

1. a) Design a welded plate girder to carry a superimposed load of 50 KN/m. The span
of the girder =25m. Design cross section, connection and curtailment.
b) Sketch the longitudinal section and cross section of the girder. Show typical
arrangement of stiffness. [24+8]

2. a) Design a gusseted base for the following data:

Cross section of the column-ISMB 400 with 200 × 10mm cover plates on
each flange.
Load acting on the column-1500kN
Strength of concrete pedestal – 5N/mm2.
b) Draw to scale the plan, side elevation of the gusseted base. [24+8]

Part –B

3. a) Write about various butt welds and explain the throat thickness and permissible
stresses for butt welds.
b) Design a lap joint to carry a load of 5000 kN. The plates are 150 × 8mm and
200 × 8mm. The lap length of the plates should not exceed 150mm. [4+12]

4. Design a simply supported beam for the following data.

Span of the beam = 5m.
Superimposed load = 30 KN/m
The compression flange is unrestrained and the ends of the beam are unrestrained
against rotation. (Design for flexure and check for shear and deflection). [16]

5. a) Explain the design procedure of double angle tie.

b) Design a built up column to carry an axial load of 1800 KN. Use 4 angle
sections. Effective length of the column is 6m. [6+10]

6. A steel column 12 m long and carries an axial load of 1500KN. The column is
hinged at both the ends. Design an economical built up section, with double
lacing. Design the lacing also. [16]

7. a) Explain design principles of gantry girder.

b) Design a strut of a roof truss using equal angles to carry an axial load of 150KN.
The effective span is 1.5m. [6+10]
