Fish, Blue Fish: An Audio Essay Parental Figures/Legal Guardians (Audience) By Zachary Hurd News Report (Format) Do you believe that your child only learns important literary aspects from the education system they attend? This accusation is not only wrong but may even prohibit your child from obtaining the basics to learning new information. Every household should know that young children will learn from those they grow up around the most. Stop for a moment and think about this, when you get home from work, do you plop your child in front of a television screen instead of providing them with some sort of mental stimulation? Your children will learn to understand and communicate their ideas to those around them by watching those that take care of them every day. This begins their path to literacy, making you an influential literary sponsor. Children need to learn from books and examples. Do you read basic childrens books to your kids in the afternoon? When parents read to their children, it allows them to see different words and learn the sounds that match them. I remember when I was growing up, my father would read my brothers and I Dr. Seuss books and I would follow his finger as they traced the words. I moved my mouth to form the sounds that matched the letters and words that were read to me. Then I ran around the house repeating the rhymes from books like, One Fish, Two Fish,

Red Fish, Blue Fish, to everyone, even the dog. Repetition and rhyme are great forms of writing for teaching young kids to pronounce new words. In most modern families, there are at least two to three kids in the household. Parents should know that brothers and sisters influence their siblings literacy paths substantially. Older siblings usually, unintentionally, teach their younger brothers or sisters the most. When I was growing up, my older brother would test me with words that he was learning in class to try and embarrass me, proving that he was much smarter than I was. I bet you dont even know how to spell flower! he taunted. Do so! F-L-A-W-E-R, flower! I would angrily shout back. Of course he would respond with a blatant laugh and scoff. But I began to practice these words and learned some that I wouldnt be introduced to for a few years. Spelling and pronunciation arent the only literary aspects that your child will pick up on at home. When your child uses the wrong form of a word in a sentence, do you allow them to continue using the word the wrong way or do you correct them before they make it a habit? It is important to correct bad habits early on. I know I used to have a bad habit using the wrong pronoun placement. My parents always stopped me mid-sentence to correct myself, reinforcing proper grammar. You, as parents, will introduce you child to different forms of literature and provide the path to their literacy. They will learn most of the basics of literacy right at home, around their family. This is why it is important to provide mental stimulation, different forms of literature, and correct bad habits. This is Zachary Hurd, and I approve this message. Thank you and have a great day!
