What is FCCLA?
Overview:
FCCLA is on of the many professional organizations related to Family and Consumer Science Education but many of the students might not know that their school has an FCCLA chapter. This lesson gives students the opportunity to find out more about FCCLA and to teach about and promote the organization to their peers.

Performance Objective 1: (Identify domain & level)

There is no state standard and objective set for this lesson but rather it is encouraged that there is a lesson to promote FCCLA. My personal objectives are as follows: ! Students will identify what the FCCLA program is and what FCCLA offers. They will prepare a short presentation for the class that describes some of the activities and goals of the organization. (Cognitive Domain, Level 1 and Level 3) Students will think of creative ways to integrate FCCLA into their interior design class and throughout the school. (Cognitive Domain, Level 5)

Introduction/Set Induction (10 minutes):

Welcome students to class and take role. If there is anything due this day ask students to turn in those items. If this is the second day of class you may need students to turn in a signed copy of the syllabus. Remind students that today the class will be in the computer lab. They are to leave their books and backpacks in the classroom because the whole class period will not be spend in the lab. Students should be assigned to work in groups of about 5 (five) students. Either the students or the instructor can assign these groups. Here are some possibilities: -Grouped by who sits at the same grouping of tables -Alphabetically by last name -Students could be given a piece of paper as they walk into class with a number on it. All like numbers are in the same group.

-Students can be numbered off and grouped by which number they were assigned. After students have been grouped give one of the team members the assignment guidelines and questions. Instruct the class that they will be learning about FCCLA, which is the professional organization for Family and Consumer Sciences. As a group they will be given a list of questions that they need to address in a PowerPoint that they will present later in the class period. Remind students that they only need to bring paper and a pencil to the computer lab and that the classroom will be locked. Ask them to be quiet as the class walks to the computer lab.

Transition (10 minutes):

Ask students to stand up, tuck in their chairs and QUIETLY walk to the computer lab. Once you have arrived in the computer lab write http://www.fcclainc.org on the board. Get the students attention in which ever way you feel is appropriate for the setting and ask them to log in to their computers and go to the website on the board. If you feel it necessary to deduct points from the groups presentation for going to other websites before their presentation is completed, let the class know at this point.

Lesson Body (50 minutes)

Group Investigation PHASE 1: Students identify topic (0 minutes): Students will be given a packet that identifies their topic for them in class before they have walked to the computer lab. Each of the topics covers different aspects of the FCCLA program. Topics include: -About Us, What is FCCLA? -Programs: Career Connection and FACTS -Programs: Families First and Financial Fitness -Programs: Leadership Service in Action and Power of One -Programs: Stop the Violence and Student Body PHASE 2: Each team decides what resources they will need to carry out their investigation (0 minutes): Resources have been provided for the students, they will be using the information found at the national FCCLA website. Each computer will allow students the use of PowerPoint to create a short slide show to present to the class.

PHASE 3 & 4: Groups gather information from a variety of sources. Groups prepare final report (25 minutes): How are you going to have students share their work to the larger class? For this specific lesson students wont be using a variety of sources to gather information, they will be required to find all information regarding their specific topic from http://www.fcclainc.org. As students find required bits of information they are to write answers down on the papers provided and compile their findings into a short presentation that can be used to teach other members of their class and the school about FCCLA. Each groups presentation should contain a minimum of 5 (five) slides, as well as a slide dedicated to their title. Groups can choose whichever background they prefer as long as it is professional and the words provided on the slides are easy to read. Pictures may be included and are highly encouraged. When pictures are used students should add a citation at the end of their slide show. For pictures taken from the FCCLA website students are only required to source the http://www.fcclainc.org, not each individual page.

Transition (10 minutes):

After groups have worked on their presentations for about 20 minutes have them quickly finish up their slides and email the presentation to you and whichever email you have provided for your students. After they have sent the PowerPoint to you students should log off their computers, tuck in their chairs and head QUIETLY back to class where they will fill out the student portion of the rubric. When you get back to class pull up the email you had your students send their presentations to and open each presentation. Doing this will cut down on the time it would take for a member of each group to log on, find their PowerPoint and open the file.

PHASE 5: The class meets all together and presents their findings to one another (25 minutes): After each of the presentations has been opened on the teachers computer each group should present their PowerPoint in order starting with group 1 (one). Group one must go first because they are the group that introduces what exactly FCCLA is and the purpose of the organization. Remind students to hand in their rubrics before the start of their presentation so the instructor can provide feedback and grade the PowerPoint.

Summary/Closure (10 minutes):

Thank the groups for their presentations and ask students if they have any questions about FCCLA. Answer student questions if there are any. Instruct students that if they wish to join FCCLA that they can visit with the advisor, whether that be you or one of the other FCS teachers at the school. Let students know that there is a fee for being a member and the cost, which day they have their meetings. If your FCCLA chapter has recently done a fun activity talk about that experience and get students excited and interested in the FCCLA program.

Assessment/Evaluation:
A rubric will have been provided to each group so they know how their presentation will be evaluated. Part of the rubric is to be filled out by the students (as a group) and the instructor will fill out the other part as the group is giving their presentation. There are 30 points possible on this assignment.
