Demonstration Planning Sheet

Introduction/Overview of Demonstration

FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES

Introduction/Establishing Set:
Motivator: Types of Seam finishes-Hand out the seven samples of seam finishes to each table and give each students a worksheet. Each of the students will examine seven samples of seam finishes and determine what each of the seam finishes is called. They will then write on their worksheets what they think each of the samples are called.

Overview of Demonstration:

The teacher will demonstrate each of the seven seam finishes:flat felled, french, zigzag machine finish, rolled, serged, pinking shear finish and bias tape finish. After the teacher demonstrates each seam finish the students will practice making each of the seam finishes. The students will decide what type of seam finish they will use for their project and hand in the sample seam finishes.

Demonstration Main Body

Outline of Steps in Demonstration:

Have students gather around a central sewing machine for a demonstration on seam finishes, they will need a pencil and notebook or paper for notes. The teacher will present the techniques for each of the finishes talked about in the introduction: flat felled, french, zigzag, rolled, serged, pinking shear and bias tape finishes. After the teacher demonstrates each of the seam finishes the students will practice sewing each of the seven seam finishes.

Points to be Made During Demonstration:

Note the differences in the seam finishes, describe which seam finishes are best for the types of projects the students will be sewing, and show the students what the finished seams look like and hang them on the board for students to reference.

Closure/Follow-up/Summary

Have the students hand in their sample of seam finishes for the teacher to look at to determine if they were able to correctly sew the finishes and what needs to be discussed further.

Evidence of Student Learning/Assessment

Have students hand in their seam finish samples and check to see if students were able to correctly sew each of the seam finishes demonstrated.
