Complex Cooperative Instruction Big Idea: Homes around the world (Social Studies) Grade: 3rd Essential Questions: Are regions in the world more similar or different? How do cultures lead to
similarities and differences between regions? Grouping: Divide students based upon different regions in the world. Groups 3. Group 1: Daisy, Megan, Arianna Group 2: Lindsay, Andrea, Todd Group 3: Randal, Summer, Liza Group 4: Logan, Amy, Cody When explaining group roles, Not all of you have all the abilities to complete this project, but each of you have an ability to contribute. You may choose to decide who is the coordinator for each part of the project but each of you is expected to know all the parts and be able to report to the class the information gathered. Some of you will be good at constructing the models, some of you will be able to recognize the art, dance, and music in the cultures of the region, some of you will have agricultural knowledge that will help better understand how and why homes are built, some of you will have a wealth of knowledge to share with your group members on how to write, and present your information, and some of you may even have been to these regions, or have family there. Some of you may be good readers, or writers and can find information within a text efficiently for your group. Some of you are good with numbers which will come in handy when discussing population density, and you may even want to include a graph. And some of you are hard workers, that pay attention to the little details that really bring to light the reality of the regions. The students will be researching different regions of the world and the types of homes found in them. -note: if they find a huge transient population in their region, they need to find out where they also live. They are not to exclude this population. In the research portion students will need to find: geography, population density, cultures of region, weather patterns, and how all of these ideas affect the types of homes built in that region. After they research and find different types of homes within their regions, they will create a stand up poster board to present their information that includes the geography, population density, cultures of region, and weather patterns as well as their summarization of how those affect the types of homes built for their regions. They will also include a diorama of the different homes each group discovered. Each student is responsible for constructing a model of a home found in their region. (3 homes per region) There are more than three types of homes in each region but I would like you to each pick one that is interesting to you. Jigsaw: After projects have been completed, students will present to another group so that all students are learning about the other regions in the world. Students will need to take brief notes on a note catcher that also cover the same concepts and ideas they had in their own projects, ie: geography, population density, cultures of region, and weather patterns. Assigning Competence: - Wow Randal your hard work and detail in your model really brings to light the reality of this type of home - Codys knowledge of agriculture is contributing to his groups understanding of their region - Great job Daisy, you really caught the essence of the culture in your art!
