Acid Rain Lab Collaborators: Caleb Miranda Christian Connor Abstract: The idea of this lab was to discover

the effects of acid rain on grass. Grass was grown inside bottles for a few weeks and allowed to develop fully into the area it is given. Three different pHs are used on three different bottles of grass one bottle with distilled water one with a liquid with a pH of 4 and one with a pH of 2. The grasses were watered with the liquids over a span of two weeks or so then the effects on the grass and soil were observed and written down. The distilled water allowed the grass to grow normally while the grasses dealing with lower acidity did not do so well with just a pH of 4 the grass was killed off and the soil became weak to cling together and with the pH of 2 there was no grass alive and the soil lost all moisture and was crumbling easily. Question: How does acid rain affect the growth of grass and its soil? Hypothesis: If grass is introduced to acid rain then the soil and grass will die because the acidity is very bad for the grass and its soil. Parts of the experiment: Control- Distilled water Experimental group- pH of 4 and pH of 2 Independent Variable- acidity of liquid watering grass Dependent variable- reaction of grass Materials: 3 soda bottles cut out Soil Grass seed Distilled water Liquid with a pH of 4 Liquid with a pH of 2 Beaker Methods: 1. Place soil and grass seed in each of the three bottles and allow it to grow for a few weeks to full size 2. Once the grass is full grown each bottle will now receive a different watering treatment of either 150mL of distilled water 150mL of a liquid with a pH of 4 or a liquid with a pH of 2 3. Do this every few days and after about two weeks examine what has happened to the grasses 4. Record observations

Data: Distilled ObservationsStrong roots and the grass is very healthy pH of 4Grass not very healthy soil dried roots are thin and weak pH of 2Grass dead along with roots soil is completely dry roots separate from soil easily Data Analysis: There is a clear demonstration what acid rain will do to grass. The acidity even at a pH of 4 was deadly to the grass and an even lower pH was completely destructive to it. The observations show that acid rain is very detrimental to grasss life and that the acidity of water has a huge effect on its life Conclusion: Acid rain has a huge impact on the growth of grass and other plants. It slows the growth or can even kill of entire forests according to the epa website. The grass in the lab clearly suffered from the pH it had to endure as it died of just within a span of two weeks. If rain were to come down like this on a rain forest it would nearly kill off the whole forest. The effect of acid on grass and the soil was very apparent from both pH levels as the soil was dried out and the grass was dying or was dead. Acidity very clearly has an effect on plants and it is not good. Citation: "Effects of Acid Rain - Forests." EPA. Environmental Protection Agency, n.d. Web. 17 Dec. 2013.
