Chapter 6.

Bio 30 NWRC
Chemical Reactions
• Chemical changes are a
result of chemical
reactions. All chemical
reactions involve a
change in substances
and a change in energy.
Neither matter or energy
is created or destroyed in
a chemical reaction---only
changed

the skinny bird (reactant) and

the worm (reactant) combine
to make one product, a fat
bird.
Chemical Reactions

OR…the egg (the reactant),

• reactant + reactant which contained the turtle at
-------> product one time, now has opened
and the turtle (product) and
egg shell (product) are now
two separate substances
Product reactant +reactant
Chemical Reactions

OR…the egg (the reactant), which

• reactant + reactant contained the turtle at one time, now
has opened and the turtle (product)
-------> product and egg shell (product) are now two
separate substances
Product reactant +reactant
Balancing Act
• ____Ca+____O2 ----_____CaO

How many Ca?

How Many O?
What coefficient will you need
Ca OO to add one this side?

Now what coefficients will you

need to add on this side? Your Balanced equation should look
like this
2Ca+02- 2CaO
Try the Next one
• ___N2+___H2- ____NH3

• Count your atoms

• Add co-efficients to each side until they
balance
• Your answer should be
• N2+3H22NH3
Energy of Reactions
• Chemical reactions
need energy to occur.
• Activation Energy is
the minimum energy
necessary for a
specific chemical
reaction to occur
Enzymes
• Some good information on enzymes (click
here)

• enzymes are catalyst which lower the

amount of activation energy needed for a
reaction to take place
• Watch Video on enzymes for a good
demonstration of how enzymes facilitate
digestion in the body.
Assessment Questions
• 1.
• A+B are REACTANTS
• AB is the PRODUCT
Assessment Questions
• 2.
• Exothermic
Reaction
• (see page 158)
• (energy is given
off in reaction so
products have
lower energy
than reactants)
Assessment Questions
• 2.
• Endothermic
Reaction
• (see page 158)
• (energy is
absorbed – energy
of products higher
than the reactants)
Assessment Questions
• 3. Matter is
neither created
nor destroyed –
it can only
change form
Assessment Questions
• 4. Enzymes
lower the
activation
needed to start
chemical
reactions
