Parking

Management
What Is Parking
Management ?
In the early days, the larger closed
malls was surrounded by a sea of
asphalt are history. Malls built in
open fields are now surrounded by
residential neighbourhood & a
variety of businesses. Hence the new
developments are being constructed
on what was once prime parking for
shoppers & stuffs.

This factor increases the demand of

parking.
Parking should be consist
of following factors -
 Wayfinding
 Safety
 Security
 Design
 Parking area orientation
 User walking distance
1. Wayfinding

Shopping centers are becoming

larger & more complex. It is
important for the user to easily find
his destination . This starts with
clear , simple access to the mall.
Using clear , visible signage &
graphics to direct the driver &
pedestrian , so that they can easily
find their destination.
2. Safety
Mixing vehicles & pedestrians is a
safety issue. It is important to
minimize pedestrian-vehicular
conflict.
Accommodating one way facility for
cars to enter the parking area can
minimize the problems.
3. Security
It is critical to maintain the total
security for a parking facility.
But , minimizing walking distance ,
eliminating hiding places, increasing
lighting levels, use of cameras ,
security patrols , increasing ceiling
heights etc can increases the
security level to some extent.
4. Design

Large flat floors are preferable for

parking because –

 large flat parking areas improve

visibility & security.
 it is easier to open & close car
doors.
It reduces pedestrian/vehicular
5. Parking Area Orientation

To create safe & convenient parking

areas , the orientation should be
such as it –
 align rows of parking spaces
perpendicular to the facility to
minimizing the number of
pedestrian aisles crossing.
Provides access crosswalks from
parking area to facility entries.
6. User Walking Distance
Long term users, such as employees ,
will generally accept longer walking
distances from parking areas to their
workplace .
Short term users such as customers or
visitors expect shorter walking
distances.
Parking spaces for a specific facility
should not be more than 75 meters
from the facility entrance.
TYPES OF PARKING AREA
1. Off-street parallel parking
2. Off-street perpendicular
parking
3. On-street perpendicular
parking
4. On-street parallel parking
5. 60 degree parking
6. 60 degree one way & two way
parking
7. 45 degree parking
8. 45 degree interlocking &
herringbone pattern
9. 30 degree parking.
10. 90 degree parking
8 . 45 degree interlocking &
herringbone pattern
Advantages & Disadvantages
of 45 degree interlocking &
herringbone pattern
1. Off-street parallel
parking
Off street parking is the most
common & accepted method of
satisfying facility needs. When
sitting off-street parking area ,
the designer should consider –
2. Creating multiple smaller
parking area rather than one
large mass.
3. Minimizing the number of
entrance & exits.
Off-street parallel
parking
Advantages &
Disadvantages of Parallel
parking
Advantages
2. Works well in extremely narrow,
linear spaces.
3. Requires minimum pavement area.

Disadvantages
 Less than ideal visibility of
adjacent traffic
 Inefficient use of on-street spaces.
2. Off-street perpendicular
parking
3. & 4. On-street
parallel &
perpendicular parking-
If on-street parking is used , the
following factors should be
considered-
o Maintain a minimum distance
of 15 meters from on-street
parking spaces to intersections
& off-street parking area
entrances.
On-street perpendicular parking
5. 60 degree parking
60 degree one way & two way parking

6. 60 degree one
way & two way
parking
Advantages & Disadvantages of
60 degree parking

Advantages
2. Good visibility
3. Short term parking
configuration.
Disadvantages
5. Require more pavement
per vehicle than
perpendicular.
7. 45 degree parking
8 . 45 degree interlocking &
herringbone pattern
Advantages &
Disadvantages of 45 degree
parking
Advantages
2. Reduced width requirements for
layout.
3. Easy out of parking spaces.

Good visibility.
Disadvantages
6. Does not work well with two-way
aisles.
9. 30 degree parking
Advantages &
Disadvantages of 30
degree parking

Advantages
2. Easy parking

Reduced width requirements for

parking.
Disadvantages
5. Requires most pavement per
vehicle.
10. 90 degree parking
Advantages & Disadvantages
of 90 degree parking

Advantages
2. Works well with either one or
two way aisles.
Handles most vehicles per sq.
met. Of area.
Disadvantages
5. Requires widest area.
6. Two way traffic can create
some visibility problems.
