Cong appoints own manifesto panel

Express News Service Posted: Aug 29, 2009 at 0420 hrs
Mumbai Even as the NCP waited anxiously for a pre-poll alliance, the Congress has gone ahead and appointed a 20-
member committee, headed by Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre, to prepare a
manifesto for the Assembly polls.

The first meeting of the committee was held on Friday, which discussed issues to be highlighted in the manifesto. Thakre
said it was a preliminary meeting; not all members were present. He said detailed discussions would follow later.

The panel members include Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Sushilkumar Shinde, Gurudas Kamat, AR
Antulay, Balasaheb Vikhe-Patil, Jaywantrao Awle, Kripashankar Singh, Balasaheb Thorat, Arin Naseem Khan, Nitin
Raut, Bhai Jagtap, Balasaheb Shivarkar, Amin Patel, Shivajirao Moghe, BI Nagrale, Vasudhatai Deshmukh, Nirmala
Samant Prabhawalkar and Mahadeo Shelar besides Thakre.

The move comes close on the heels of a series of meetings between state Congress leaders and the party high command
in Delhi over poll preparations and the possibility of an alliance with the NCP.

The NCP, meanwhile, has already invited applications from ticket-aspirants from all the 288 constituencies. It has also
started working on a separate manifesto, besides keeping a draft prepared for a joint manifesto, should the pre-poll
alliance work out.
