Student Teacher Lesson Plan #1

Lesson Plan for: Social Studies Date: 09-13-13 Student Teacher: Gina Fionda Benchmarks/Core Standards: Meet Michigan Chapter 1 Lesson 2: State Symbols GLCES: 3 G5.0.1 Locate natural resources in Michigan and explain the consequences of their use. Objectives: 1. Students will be able to research our state symbols using their Meet Michigan Textbook. 2. Students will be able to apply their knowledge of state symbols to create and illustrate a Michigan stamp. Materials: Black Construction Paper Stamp Template State Symbols Worksheet Meet Michigan Textbook Pencil Colored Pencils Glue Stick

Anticipatory Set: To get the students motivated about creating their own stamp design with Michigan symbols, I thought I would share with them what a stamp looks like on an actual letter to be mailed and what it is used for. This will help students to authenticate the experience for the students before I begin my lesson. I will move on to tell students that the stamp they are creating is special because it will showcase the state of Michigan with our state symbols. Direct Instruction: Since the students already will have read the chapter on state symbols in their Meet Michigan social studies book the day prior, this will be their base knowledge that I will utilize for my activity. I will review with students a few of the state symbols at the start of the lesson by asking for participation of who can tell me a symbol they remember from their reading. From here, I will explain the worksheet to the students where they will be working with a partner in a pair-

share to find the answers to the state symbols listed. After, we will go over the worksheet as a class to make sure students have the correct answers for their state symbols before they start to make their stamp. Next, I will give students the directions for creating their stamp and what it should include. I will remind them that this is a graded assignment. I may show them the grading rubric and say these are the things we will be looking for when we grade your assignment. Guided Practice: The guided practice will be when I explain to students on the Elmo what they will be doing in their pair/share partners for 5-7 minutes. As students are researching the state symbols in their textbook, I will be monitoring the classroom and offering assistance if needed. Independent Practice: Students will be independently working on creating their own Michigan stamp design for 20-30 minutes. The students will choose three to five of our state symbols that they will illustrate on their stamp. It should also include the words, Greetings from Michigan, and a stamp price to promote authenticity. Checking Understanding: As I am teaching I will do quick checks for understanding to make sure I know students are comprehending the information I am teaching. For example, I may ask students to share with me what they already know about the state symbols. I may also have students give me a hand signal such as thumbs up if they understand the concept or thumbs down if they need further explanation. In addition, as we work independently, I may ask students to show me how many more minutes they need to complete the assignment to judge the pacing of our activity. Closure: To bring our activity to a close, I will tell students we will make our stamps into a class book. This will include laminating the individual stamps and binding them together into a book. We will put it into our class library for Michigan history. In addition, I will remind students the steps to do when they are finished and how to clean up from the activity. Self-Reflection/Evaluation: To be completed after lesson.
