NEWS ADVISORY FOR 1/3/14 JUDGE WEIGHS PLAN TO HOUSE SEX PREDATOR DOUGLAS BADGER IN CAMPO A MOVE OPPOSED BY JACOB, COMMUNITY
WHAT: On the heels of a similar hearing last week, a Superior Court judge will consider a proposal to place a sexually violent predator in rural East County. County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and residents are deeply troubled by plans to house predator Douglas Badger in Campo and they hope to make their opposition clear at Fridays hearing. Badger has a history of sexual assaults dating back to 1974. A similar hearing was held last week on plans to put sexually violent predator Mikel Wayne Marshall in Jacumba Hot Springs. In that case, the judge said he wanted to visit the site before making a decision and to explore whether Marshall could instead be placed outside Donovan State Prison. Friday, Jan. 3, 9 a.m. San Diego County Superior Court (Dept. 28), 220 W. Broadway, San Diego. Supervisor Jacob, who represents East County. Badger, who remains under custody, may also appear. The Supervisor and others say allowing sexually violent predators to live in the community endangers public safety. If the law does not allow predators like Badger to remain behind bars, he should be placed outside the gates of Donovan State Prison, where other sexually violent predators have been located. At least four of these predators have been placed in rural East County in recent years. Three of them later violated the terms of their release.
