Summative Writing Task

There are many differences between the novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the movie, The Hound of the Baskervilles by David Attwood. Many of the changes were not important, but other parts were the main idea of the book. The differences between the book and novel are based off of the characters actions and actions of the hound. The movie, The Hound of the Baskervilles, directed by David Attwood, and the novel written by, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were very different in many different ways that affected the outcome of the pieces of entertainment. The novel, The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was the original foundation. The differences of the characters and hounds actions between the book and the movie will be expressed in at the books point of view. The first difference that was found in the characters actions were that the book started with Dr. Mortimer being interviewed, I think, Dr. Mortimer, you would do wisely if without more ado you would kindly tell me plainly what the exact nature of the problem is in which you demand my assistance(Doyle 17). Another point that was different was that in the novel at the beginning, all of the suspicion was directed toward Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore, with the secrecy of the secret signals to Selden. In the scene when Watson and Sir Henry find out about Selden, an escaped prisoner, who then seek out to find him and then he escapes. I caught one glimpse of his short, squat, strongly-built figure as he sprang to his feet and turned to run(132). Later in the book Watson finds that Sherlock Holmes has been secretly living in a hut upon the moor, and at the time Watson didnt know it was his good friend, but Holmes finds out that Watson was waiting for him inside the hut because

of a cigarette that Watson had just finished smoking. Throwing aside my cigarette, I closed my hand upon the butt of my revolver and, walking swiftly up to the door, I looked in(161). During the scene of Seldens mistaken death, Stapleton appears to bring suspicion toward his self. It was found out to be Selden, not Sir Henry, as they expected because of the beard of Selden. At the very end of the novel it is revealed that Stapleton was the murderer, but then is said to have drowned in the muck to his death. Mrs. Stapleton was hiding and had helped Holmes and Watson find Mr. Stapleton. There is also a secret hide out where the hound was kept. The hounds reactions had to do with the books outcome very much. The first difference that was found in the book versus the movie was that when the hound attacked Sir Henry, it just knocked him over and bit at his neck, because Holmes and Watson had already shot at it by then. In front of us as we flew up the track we heard scream after scream from Sir Henry and the deep roar of the hound(202). The similarities with the actions of the hound were that the owner was Stapleton. There were also many shrieks upon the moor. Another similarity was the cause of the hounds death. The hound was shot. The hound was also the reason for Seldens death. There were many differences found in the novel as compared to the movie. The movie, The Hound of the Baskervilles, by David Attwood was the visual of the novel. The differences of the characters and the hounds actions between the movie and the book will be expressed in the movies point of view. The first difference that was found through the characters actions, occurred in the first scene of the movie when it showed Selden, an escaped prisoner/ killer, running from the police. The next difference

was that the scene, was the same just not as detailed, to make Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore more suspicions. At that point in the book there still wasnt a bunch of suspicion. During the time when Sir Henry and Watson seek out to find Selden, in the book, Selden shows up in the house, steals Sir Henry Clothes, and steals food. Toward the end of the movie when Watson finds Holmes hiding place, in the movie it never tells the audience how Holmes found out that Watson was in the hut. During the part of the movie where Selden falls to his death after being chased by the hound, Stapleton does not appear which caused no suspicion toward his self. Also when Selden first dies, they think it was Sir Henry, but then they found out it was Selden because of his hands. Toward the end of the movie after the hound was released and killed, Holmes and Watson went after Stapleton. He was still in his house which was the first difference. The second difference in this scene was that Stapleton had shot Watson and had escaped. Holmes goes after him, but then falls into the muck. The third difference was that Stapleton was talking to him and was about to shoot him in the head, when Watson fired his gun hitting Stapletons head before he shot Holmes. Watson then helps Holmes out of the muck. Mrs. Stapleton was hung and killed by Stapleton before the detectives could help her. The movie and the book were changing and were affected by the hounds actions. At the end of both forms of this story, Watson and Holmes both told everybody that they were leaving for London. That night Sir Henry went to dinner at the Stapletons. Neither Sherlock Holmes nor Watson had actually left. This was part of the plan. Both of them

knew that Mr. Stapleton was the murderer and had planned to kill Sir Henry that night on Sir Henrys way home. Holmes and Watson, with the apprentice of Cartwright were spying upon the two from a rock a couple yards away from the house. When Sir Henry left down the trail, the Hound was released and was set out to kill Sir Henry. The difference at the time was when the dog attacked Sir Henry and ripped off his ear. The hound then turned and tried to attack Holmes and Watson, but they had both shot the beast by the time it could do anything. Another difference between the movie and the novel was that the hounds actions had occurred the first night Watson and Sir Henry had stayed. At dinner the hound had appeared at the window, trying to break in, but had left by the time Watson could get to its place. The similarities were that the hound was responsible for the attacking of Sir Henry and the killing of Sir Charles. There were many differences between the movie and the novel. These pieces of literature were at some moments very alike, but at other times, very different. Overall it could be said that the book and the movie were both very alike with few important differences. Some of the main differences were that in this novel there were no Mr. Frankland and no Laura Lyons. This was big because Watson was supposed to find out information about the neighbors, and these two characters had a lot to do with discoveries and motives upon the moor. This caused the book to be better because with the neighbors, there were more red herrings and suspicion toward the other characters. The book had more suspicion because you could get to know the characters better. With more characters there could be more secrets and more things to hide. Usually the movies can draw out more suspicion with music, visual actions, characters appearance, verbal content, and their small actions. This was not found, with

missing details and differences within the movie. The movie, The Hound of the Baskervilles, directed by David Attwood, and the novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, were very different in many different ways that affected the outcome of the pieces of entertainment.

Hound of the Baskervilles Reflection

This was a recent assignment that had taught me a lot of valuable ways to making writing easier. This assignment was based off my understanding of the book. My job was to find similarities and differences between the movie by David Attwood and the novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This essay was one of the first chances I had to show that I had improved my writing since sixth grade. In sixth grade I had struggled with finding and using quotations appropriately. I had made that a goal and now I feel as if I have accomplished it. Some of the other strengths I found were that when writing sometimes it is not appropriate to use personal pronoun. Like in in persuading and factual writing you cant have us, me, us, etc. I had accomplished this quite well. Some of the of strengths found in this writing were certainly my thesis statement and my transitions between topics. I had improved some much since the last writing assignment. I had worked on this. There was a lot of trial and error but I made it work out. The transitions were horrendous in my Geometric Character Analysis. I made sure I fixed that issue before the next writing. Some of the weaknesses were that I had a hard time expressing what I was saying. I couldnt express my thoughts that well. Another weakness was my organization. I just kind of put words on my paper without being fully ready. I feel proud about my use and amount of perfect quotations and my use of them. That was a main accomplishment of me and hope to improve my writing even more.
