To improve police understandings of domestic disputes, assaults, or homicides, the Police Foundation funded two studies to deal with these issues. Each study confirms much of what is already known about conflict violence as well as these studies expands this body of knowledge in important ways. The first study, conducted by the Detroit Police Department, sought to understand the characteristics of homicides and assaults that occur in an intimate setting. This study also sought to determine whether or not some of these crimes could be prevented. The next study, conducted by the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, to explore the relationship between domestic disturbances, homicides, and assaults and to determine whether police could intervene effectively at the disturbance stage before homicide or assault occurs.
