New Melbourne Wholesale Markets Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Project

Project location: Melbourne, Victoria Funding recipients: Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development Total Australian Government funding: $4,694,000 (GST exclusive) Water savings: up to 67.5 ML/yr About the project: This project consists of two sub-projects: the New Melbourne Market Relocation, and the City of Whittlesea. Stormwater will be collected from the large roof areas of the Melbourne Wholesale Markets and will then be treated and reused onsite for washing down floors, toilet flushing and filling flower buckets. The City of Whittlesea will construct an irrigation system to use excess stormwater harvested from the Melbourne Wholesale Markets to irrigate the community facilities, reserves and nearby sporting fields. Project benefits/objectives: Improving the security of water supplies in Australia, without adding to greenhouse emissions. Reducing demand on potable water supplies. Helping to reduce the impact of urban runoff on water quality in receiving waters. Project progress: The development of the new Melbourne Wholesale Markets is completed. The second part of the project, the City of Whittlesea sub-project, is due to be completed by June 2013.
