Using Evidence

Many times teachers will ask you to cite specific evidence from the text to
support your answer. Why do we do this? We do this to encourage you to read
carefully and not jump to conclusions about the text before carefully reading a
second or third time. We also ask you to do this so we understand how you
came to your answer. Think of it as “showing your work” in math.

How to use evidence from the text to answer questions:

3) Provide a suggestion for the reason why the author does not reveal
the main character’s name until paragraph 16.

Example #1:
The author does not reveal the main character’s name to keep the main
character mysterious.

Example #2:
For most of the story, we only know the main character as Mrs.
Mallard. We do not discover her first name until her sister, Josephine
says, "Louise, open the door! I beg, open the door - you will make yourself ill.
What are you doing Louise? For heaven's sake open the door." Just before
Josephine says this, Louise has realized that she is now free to do as she
chooses: ‘"Free! Body and soul free!" she kept whispering.’ The fact that we now
discover her first name is symbolic of the fact that she is realizing her identity
separate from that of her husband. She is no longer Mrs. Brently Mallard, but
Louise.

What makes Example 2 stronger than Example 1?
