AMR-HR Allocation strategy

AMR-HR allocation strategy

In order to minimize call setup congestion AMR-HR feature is used.
Usually, EFR (enhanced full rate) traffic channels are allocated for assignment and handover but, in case of congestion, HR coding can be used together with AMR (adaptive multi-rate) codecs. The main benefit of AMR-HR compared with HR is better speech quality and compared with EFR is traffic capacity which is double.

Half rate traffic channels are allocated according to two BTS parameters:
- Lower Limit For FR TCH Resources (FRL) btsSpLoadDepTchRateLower Full rate TCHs are allocated until number of free FR resources is reduced below this threshold. - Upper Limit For FR TCH Resources (FRU) btsSpLoadDepTchRateUpper Full rate TCHs are allocated again when the number of free FR resources increases above this threshold. number of idle channels * 100 Number of free FR resources = -------------------------------------------------------total number of channels in working state

AMR-HR allocation strategy

FR TCHs are allocated until the number of free FR resources is reduced below a specific lower limit. After this the HR resources are allocated. When the number of FR TCH resources increases above a specific upper limit, FR TCHs are allocated again.

AMR-HR allocation strategy

Thresholds for AMR-HR activation/deactivation are defined for two main cases:

normal case
btsSpLoadDepTchRateLower btsSpLoadDepTchRateUpper
1 TRX 2 TRXs 3 TRXs 4 TRXs 5 TRXs 6 TRXs 80 25 25 10 10 10 90 55 55 20 20 20

special events
btsSpLoadDepTchRateLower btsSpLoadDepTchRateUpper
Special Event 80 90

AMR-HR allocation strategy

In order to be ready to allocate half rate traffic channels HR feature must be activated at TRX level using the parameter TRX Half Rate Support (HRS) halfRateSupport = 1 After that, each timeslot must be defined with HR capabilities. Timeslot type is set using parameter Channel x Type (CHx) channelxType = TCHD, where x=07 depends on the timeslot number.

AMR-HR allocation strategy HR packing

TCH allocation optimization is triggered by new channel allocation. After a new channel allocation an intra-cell HO is performed for a certain number of AMR-FR calls. The number is defined so that the number of free FR resources increases by one. Assignment or handovers are performed for AMR FR calls if the following conditions are met: - quality is equal or above intra HO threshold Rx qual AMR FR (IHRF) amrHoFrInHoThrDlRxQual = 0 and - signal strength is equal or greater than intra HO Lower Rx Level Limit AMR HR (LLLAMR) intraHoLoRxLevLimAmrHr = -100dBm

AMR-HR allocation strategy conclusions

The following parameters has to be checked for proper AMR-HR allocation: TRX level - halfRateSupport (HRS) = 1 - channelxType (CHx) = TCHD (only for TCH traffic channels) BTS level - btsSpLoadDepTchRateLower (FRL) - according to number of TRX or Special Events parameterization - btsSpLoadDepTchRateUpper (FRU) - according to number of TRX or Special Events parameterization - amrHoFrInHoThrDlRxQual (IHRF) = 0 - amrHoHrInHoThrDlRxQual (IHRH) = 4 - intraHoLoRxQualLimAmr (LQLAMR) = 7 - intraHoLoRxLevLimAmrHr (LLLAMR) = -100dBm - intraHoUpRxLevLimAmrHr (ULLAMR) = -47dBm
