The Etsy 30 MINUTE Social Networking Kit

Dear Friends,

As an Etsy seller you know that one of the very first pieces of advice you get about running a
successful shop is to use social networking to promote your business. (I may have even been
the one to tell you this in The Etsy Seller Success Kit!) The tools that are typically
recommended to us are: publishing a blog, microblogging using Twitter and Facebook, running
a Facebook Fan Page and posting pictures on Flickr. Each one of these tools is an incredibly
powerful opportunity to connect with people (and potential customers) from around the world
with jaw dropping speed. However, with this opportunity comes the inevitable “time suck” of
each of these tools – hours spent posting and re-posting images, discussions, sale information,
product information and responding and connecting with other Etsy sellers who are doing the
same. (And let’s not forget about all the time you need to spend actually creating and
shipping out your products!)

As a stay-at-home mother of a toddler, I know how important and precious every single
minute of the day is. After months of trial and error, I came up with a system that allows me to
broadcast and create a large online presence on my social media outlets in less than 30
minutes per day. I decided to share my system for my loyal customers - graduates of my best-
selling book The Etsy Seller Success Kit. I hope this short guide helps you streamline your
social marketing efforts so you can get back to creating your wonderful handmade products!

Best of success to you as always,

jordan

Step One: Setting and Implementing Goals

For purposes of this guide, I am going to assume you are using the following tools: a blog,
Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr. Whatever variation of this you are participating in is fine, but
the key is to follow the same type of structure I outline below.

Let’s start with some goals. These are simply suggestions; you can decide for yourself how
much you would like to commit to. The real key to building your audience is consistency. Here
are my suggested goals:

Blog – post one entry daily (m-f)

Twitter – post 3 times/day, comment on 3 posts/day
Facebook – update fan page 3 times/day, status 3 times/day
Flickr – update with new pictures 1 time/week, comment on 3 pictures/day

This may seem like a lot of posts, but several of these tools have a “2 for 1” benefit. This
means that you can post the same information across multiple platforms – lessening the amount
of original content you will need to create. It is as simple as cutting and pasting!

Step Two: Putting Your Goals in Action

1. Blog

You will want to start the day off by publishing a blog post. Believe it or not, posting to your
blog is the only real original writing content you will need to produce each day. Here is a
time saving tip for blog entries: come up with a daily theme and follow it (see sample schedule
below). This will save you a lot of headache when trying to come up with new material each
day. I also recommend that you get ahead of your schedule and have posts saved on reserve
in case you can’t get to the computer one day, or you have a case of writer’s block.

Sample Blog Posting Schedule:

Mondays – New in my Shop
Tuesdays – 5 great Etsy gifts to give
Wednesdays – In my studio (pictures and notes about how you work)
Thursdays – An interview with an Etsy seller
Friday – links and promotions

Don’t forget to make your posts fun and valuable – not just another place for self-promotion.
You want to build your audience of loyal followers here!

2. Facebook

Once you have your blog post up, head over to Facebook next. Your Facebook fan page is a
fantastic tool that is really easy to keep fresh and updated. I suggest that you update 3 times
per day. Don’t forget to set your fan page to automatically send updates to your Twitter
account. This is a huge time saver, and can be a great source of new followers! (Plug: If you
have questions about setting up a Facebook fan page, you may want to check out my
Facebook for Etsy Success Kit.)

To Do (fan page):
Update 1: link to your daily blog post with an enticing headline
Update 2: a link to your Etsy product listing
Update 3: a product photo

To Do (personal page):
Update your status 3 times/day with something related to your business – are you
currently blogging, creating something new, taking photos? Whatever it is, make sure
your friends on Facebook know that you run your own business and are keeping busy
at it!

  4
3. Twitter

Updates
As stated above, these updates come automatically from your Facebook fan page!! No need
to re-post.

To Do: (no need to execute if you have facebook set up properly)

Update 1: link to your blog post with an enticing headline
Update 2: a link to your Etsy product listing
Update 3: a product photo

Responses
Open up your Twitter feed and browse through what your followers are discussing. You can
also try searching for people using the word “Etsy”. Next, send a direct message to at least 3
of them in response to their posts.

To Do:
Make 3 comments in response to the updates of people that you follow. Make them
pleasant and helpful – you are trying to make new friends here!

Flickr

To Do: (once/week) – upload new photos (if you have iphoto it is as simple as pushing
a button!)
To Do (daily) – use keywords that are Etsy related or otherwise to browse around and
find pictures that inspire you. Let the author know how you feel about their photo!

5 Quick Ways To Make A Big Splash With Your Social Networking Efforts

1. Sponsor or host a giveaway on your blog. Include extra entries for contestants who
become Facebook fans, follow you on Twitter, or subscribe to your blog. This is a
great way to get a big boost to your subscriber base in a short amount of time.

2. Include exciting and relevant content, resources, freebies and coupons that are only
available to people who follow you on Facebook, Twitter or your blog..

3. People love lists (ahem). Post as many as you can come up with – 5 stylish Etsy gifts for
women, men, or kids, top 10 trends in jewelry, 5 reasons to buy handmade soap, etc.
Include these on your blog and spread them to the rest of your social media networks.

4. If you find an article from another blogger that would be interesting or useful to your
fan base, make sure to post a link to it on your blog. You will get noticed by the
author and the search engines.

5. Offer to “guest post” on another (preferably high-traffic) blog. This is a great way to
introduce yourself and your work to a brand-new audience. Make sure to post a link
on all of your sites as well!

Conclusion

I hope this short guide gave you some new ideas about how to effectively organize your
social networking efforts. Remember to always treat social networking in the same way you
would traditional networking – have fun and look for real connection—and the rest will follow
naturally.
