G RA D E 3 COMEAU

Language Arts
Students have developed stamina with all the Daily Five activities. Students continue to learn many reading strategies through the CAF. They are practicing using beginning and ending sounds, stretching the word and looking for little words in big words and tuning into interesting words. Tuning into interesting words and unknown words helps to expand vocabulary. Your child can use the dictionary to find the definition of the words or search it on the internet. Students will complete a report of their choice this month. Students will know the expectations for this report by using a rubric to help complete all the requested tasks. They continue to edit their work through the use of different checklists which are in their mini writing offices!

Math
This month we will be continuing to work on adding and subtracting two 2-digit numbers using personal strategies we learn in class. At this point, students are expected to use addition strategies such as adding from left to right, make ten, doubling, and friendly number. For subtraction the students can use the strategies think addition for subtraction, doubles and friendly number. They are encouraged to develop personal strategies that enable them to efficiently determine the answer. Practicing their basic facts will help them be more successful with adding and subtracting larger numbers. We will also be working on bar graphs and sorting regular and irregular shapes this month. The students will learn to collect data, and construct, label and interpret bar graphs. They will learn how to classify shapes according to the number of sides.

Roots of Empathy
Please read this letter from Mrs. Perkins Love

Our class have been participating the Roots of Empathy program. I am thrilled at the level of interest and participation of the children in our class. Babies are truly special and we can learn so much about ourselves by learning about them. Jennifer Russell has brought her baby in again baby Kieran has grown so much. Ask your child about what he is able to do now that he wasnt the last time he visited us. Mrs. Perkins Love continues to come in to discuss with our class things such as why babies and people cry and what things we can do to sooth them. Each pre-visit, students are asked to predict ways the baby might have grown and things he might be able to do that he couldnt before. As before, if you have any questions about the program, please dont hesitate to call Mrs. Perkins-Love at 847-6304 or email at jane.perkinslove@nbed.nb.ca.
