Materials: Book, The Outsiders Movie The Outsiders Computers iPad Internet Blogger Microsoft Word Apps Songify Talking Tom Instructional Directions: *Class should be done reading the book, this week focus on watching the movie Day 1 1. Ensure all classroom devices have access to Songify https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/songify-by-smule/id438735719 2. Using the projector show the students what the app looks like in the app store from the iPad. 3. Explain to the students they will simply record themselves reading the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost from Chapter 5, Page 77, onto Songify and Songify does the rest. 4. Once they read the poem and play it back on Songify the app turns it into a song. 5. After recording the poem play it back to themselves. 6. Form small groups of 3 or 4 with students near them and play the song for the group. Give the students about 5 minutes to share the songs. 7. Have a small discussion about why they think Ponyboy remembered the poem at that moment in the story. (5 more minute discussion) 8. Then ask the students to write a one paragraph response about why they think Ponyboy remembered the poem at that moment. Day 2 & 3 1. Ensure the movie The Outsiders is ready to be played on the projector 2. Ensure all classroom devices have access to the app TalkingTom https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/talking-tom-cat/id377194688 3. Explain to the students they will be watching the movie and as long as they remain quiet they will not have to take notes while watching the movie. 4. Instruct the students that once the movie is over they will use the TalkingTom app to answer a question. They will be comparing the movie to the book and which one they felt depicted the idea of stereotypes better. 5. They will then record their responses on the app TalkingTom and share them in small groups. Explain to them their answers need to be short when using the app and playing them back for the group. Give the students about 10 minutes to have a short discussion about their opinions. 6. After the small group discussion instruct students to write a one-paragraph response to

which they preferred the book or the movie. Include which version portrayed stereotypes better. Day 4 1. Ensure all devices have access to Google Chrome Blogger http://www.blogger.com/ 2. Using the projector, show the students the blogger website 3. Explain to the students that for the assignment they will be using my blog account to ensure no one else has access to their posts also to ensure the blogs get turned in and I will be able to view them and grade them. Explain blogs can be as long as they want and are not limited to a certain number of characters. 4. Using the provided website http://www.blogger.com/home show the students to add a blog they simply need to click on the button with a pencil and create a new post. This way other classmates can also read what they post and they can have a discussion on their responses. 5. For the blog the students will be making a prediction. After reading the book and watching the movie students will predict where they think Ponyboy will be in five years. Be as descriptive as possible. Also remind them to include at least two other characters and what might have happened to them five years later. Day 5 1. Make sure all classroom computers have access to Microsoft Word 2. As a class discuss the various stereotypes that existed in the book as well as the ones that exist today. Some examples would be the way people dress, where they live, ask the students to name a few of their own. 3. Ask the students to think about if they think there are stereotypes about peoples social status. 4. Explain to the students their assignment will be to write a three-paragraph essay describing a minimum of five stereotypes they see in the world today and how they compare to the ones in the story. Try and provide examples of stereotypes used in the book and in society today.

Assessment: Written Response Students will be graded on a 25-point scale 23-25 A Providing at least 5 examples of stereotypes from either todays society or the book. Having fewer than 5 grammar mistakes and correct paragraph structure 19-22 B Providing 4 examples of stereotypes from either todays society or the book. Having fewer than 8 grammar mistakes and good paragraph structure
