Science Week

By: Gema and Jone

About this:
From the 6th to the 10th of November, the Science, Technology and Innovation Week has been celebrated in Bilbao. We had a chance to attend to this event celebrated in the Alhondiga of Bilbao! Furthermore, we could receive extra credit for attending and giving a report of our experience. This is our experience! By Gema and Jone

Our experience!
We did manage to go to the Alhondiga, but we didnt manage to see all stands in depth It was pretty crowded in there. Here is a summary of what we did and the stands that we managed to see!

UPV
The whole exposition had been organized by students from the UPV (vasque university). They did a pretty good job!

Biomedicine Stand

This was the stand based on biomedicine. They had lots of technical devices that they used to make demonstrations for the audience.

One of the things they had was a plastic person and this screen connected to it. It was a simulation where you had to pump the persons lungs in order to reanimate them. The screen showed their heart rates.

Chemistry Stand

This was the chemistry stand. The girls in charge of it were doing very interesting experiments with various chemicals.

Renewable Energies Stand

This is a car powered by electrical energy that was displayed in the renewable energy stand.

In that same stand, they had this device. I guess you could call it a solar-powered oven. It captures the heat from the sun and bakes whatever is in the pan.

Geology Stand

This was the geology section, where they would show you various rocks and talk to you about the differences between them, where they came from and a lot of other interesting things.

Physics Stand

And finally.....THE PHYSICS STAND!!

This is us standing in front ot the physics stand being super excited!

One of the things they showed us in the physics stand was this. It consists of two bottles stuck together, as you can see. The water was falling from the top bottle to the one at the bottom and, when the guy shook it, it made a water tornado. This way, he explained, is the fastest way for the water to fall from one bottle to the other. You can also observe that, in the bottom bottle, the water is doing the contrary effect as on the top one, it is running only on the bottles edge.

Another thing they did in the physics stand was a little bit of magic. He showed us how you could easily bend a spoon, just like the magicians did, with physics. He didnt really go into depth because there were many little children and he had to keep things clear. What he did was dip the straight spoon into a smoky liquid, which made it bend as you can see in the picture.
