Day 4: Guidance Techniques

STANDARDS AND OBJECTIVES:


Standard 4: Students will evaluate and model Developmentally Appropriate Practices ( DAP) Objective 2: Identify and/or demonstrate positive guidance techniques for preschoolers. a. Review common reasons for misbehavior (normal behavior, natural curiosity, dont know better, to get attention for power, revenge, feeling inadequate and need to feel they belong). b. Positive guidance: natural consequences, logical consequences, positive statements, redirection, limited choices, time out, positive reinforcement, modeling, child directed and problem-solving. c. Identify and/or demonstrate the ability to maintain control in a large and small group setting.

Lesson Body-Box of Life, Role play scenarios printed and cut out, Causes of Behavior Case studies scenarios printed and cut out.

ESSENTIAL/ TEST QUESTIONS: What is positive guidance and how can you implement it in your life? What are the main causes for misbehavior? Why is it important for us to know the causes for misbehavior? ASSESSMENT: role play, group work participation

DESCRIPTION: REVIEW STATEMENTS---8-12 CHILDRENS BOOK---

LESSON BODY
*Introduce the Box of Life. We will have a box in the front of the class and every once in a while we will have the students write a scenario where they didnt know exactly what to do then we will talk about them. Every day at the beginning of class we will talk about one or two children scenarios. It will be call the What do I do? moment. Activity 1 (20 minutes): Encouragement/praise presentation (with Taunya) Activity 1 (30 minutes ): Guidance Techniques GUIDANCE to the chair game. Have two students go out in the hall. The purpose of the game is to have the students sit in the chair. The first student that comes in the teacher will use negative guidance. (Dont walk so slow, Dont go to the right, dont look like that, etc.) The second student will be guided to the chair using positive guidance. (Walk straight please, please stay focused on the chair, please stand in front of the chair, etc.) Class discussion: Natural consequences, logical consequences, positive statements, redirection, limited choices, time out, positive reinforcement, modeling, child directed and problem solving. ROLE PLAY: Each student will receive a scenario and positive guidance strategy they have to act out. ---- Scenarios are on the Guidance Techniques worksheet.

Activity 2 (25 minutes): Causes of Behaviors Students will evaluate and assess reasons for good and bad behavior. They will share with the class and we will discuss the different reasons for behavior. o Stage of growth, unfulfilled needs, environment, doesnt know better. Students will do the Causes of Behavior case studies worksheet in groups. o Each group will take 3 scenarios and talk about them o If there is time we will discuss with the class.

Extra Activity- The students will write down scenarios to put in the Box of Life.
