Week 1 The Structure of the Solar System Day 3 Objective: Students will conduct a lab using the Science

Lab Report template, take a picture of their Lab, and upload it to the class Wiki. Students will: Describe how planets move around the sun California Standards: Science 2.g Students know the role of gravity in forming and maintaining the shapes of planets, stars, and the solar system. 4. The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept: c. Students know how to use astronomical units and light years as measures of distances between the Sun, stars, and Earth, e. Students know the appearance, general composition, relative position and size, and motion of objects in the solar system, including planets, planetary satellites, comets, and asteroids. Common Core Comprehension and Collaboration 8.SL.1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas ISTE NETS Students 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues. 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students:

c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students: b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. Preparation: Sort out materials for each group (a few extras just in case), set up class set of iPads/MacBooks, access and login for class Wiki http://www.wikispaces.com, Gustav Holst ready to play for class during activity. Materials: iPad/MacBook White copy paper Cardboard Thumbtacks String Pencil Student textbook Lab Safety Form Science Lab Report Wiki access and accounts Projector Speakers Guided Instruction: Today students will conduct a lab experiment to demonstrate knowledge of Keplers Laws of Planetary Motion. Please read Lab Safety Form as a class. Assign groups, no more than 4 students per group. Each group should have one textbook, an iPad or MacBook, two pieces of white paper, 1 piece of cardboard, 2 thumbtacks, 1 piece of string, and a pencil. Read, Model, and Explain Procedures How do Planets Move? (Glencoe, pg. 464)
Step 1 place a blank sheet of paper on top of a piece of cardboard. Press two thumbtacks into the paper Step 2 cut a piece of string and tie the ends of the string together Step 3 loop the ends of the string around the tacks Step 4 place pencil inside loop of the string and pull it tight. Hold string tight and mark a line around the tacks. Make a complete closed curve. This is an ellipse. Step 5 Move the two tacks and mark another curve. Repeat several times with different tack positions.

Reflection Questions (Discussion Part of Science Lab Report): Describe Is the ellipse more circular when the tracks are closer together or farther apart? Explain If one of your ellipses were a planets orbit, where would the Sun be on the page? Show students where this information will be uploaded once completed, Class Wiki http://www.wikispaces.com Tell students they will be listening to Gustav Holst- Saturn & Neptune Independent Activity: Students will access the lab report on the school drive and input information using the iPad or MacBook during the lab activity. The Lab Procedures are in the textbook, pg. 464. When finished students will take a picture of the activity using their cell phone or iPad and upload the picture along with the Science Lab Report to the class Wiki
