Week 2 The Sun-Earth- Moon System Day 7 Objective: Students will conduct a lab using the Science Lab

Report template, take a picture of their Lab, and upload it to the class Wiki. Students will: Model how reflected light from the sun causes the moon to shine Explain why the Moon has Phases Compare an eclipse of the Moon and an eclipse of the Sun California Standards: Science 4. The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept:. d. Students know that stars are the source of light for all bright objects in outer space and that the Moon and planets shine by reflected sunlight, not by their own light. COMMON CORE Comprehension and Collaboration 8.SL.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 8 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. ISTE- NETS Students 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students: c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues. 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: d. Contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems. 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources. Students: c. Collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. 5. Digital Citizenship Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students:

b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity. Preparation: Sort out materials for each group (a few extras just in case), set up class set of iPads/MacBooks, access and login for class Wiki http://www.wikispaces.com, Gustav Holst ready to play for class during activity, copies of the Science Lab Report Materials: iPad/MacBook Student Textbook Science Lab Report template Foam ball Pencil Flashlight Speakers Internet/School Drive/Network Wiki access and accounts Guided Instruction: Today students will conduct a lab experiment to demonstrate knowledge of how the moon changes shape in the sky. Assign groups, no more than 4 students per group. Each group should have one textbook, an iPad or MacBook, 1 foam ball, 1 pencil, 1 flashlight and a copy of the Science Lab Report. Read, Model, and Explain Procedures How does the Moon change its shape in the sky? Step 1 Stick a foam ball onto a pencil Step 2 Face a light source and hold the ball in front of you. Record the positions of the light
source, the ball, and yourself. Draw the appearance of the ball and its shadow. Step 3 Move yourself and the ball in increments of one-eighth of a circle. At each position, record the positions of the lamp, the ball, and yourself. Draw the appearance of the ball.

(Focus on Physical Science, Chapter 11, Mini-Lab, pg. 477)

Answer the Analysis questions in the Analysis part of the Science Lab Report. Have students take a picture of each page of their Lab Report. Show students where this information will be uploaded once completed, Class Wiki http://www.wikispaces.com Tell students they will be listening to Gustav Holst- Saturn

Independent Activity: Students will complete the Mini Lab found on pg. 477 of their textbook, Focus on Physical Science. When finished, students will take a picture of each page of the Science Lab Report using their cell phone or iPad and upload the assignment to the class Wiki. When students are finished they may practice Vocabulary eFlashcards on the following website http://glencoe.mcgrawhill.com/sites/0078741858/student_view0/unit4/chapter11/vocabulary_eflashcar ds.html
