Week 2 The Sun-Earth- Moon System & Asteroids, Comets, and Meteoroids Day 10 Objective: Students will demonstrate

their knowledge of The Sun-Earth-Moon System & Asteroids, Comets, and Meteoroids by taking an online quiz and through a creative writing piece (Friendly Letter). California Standards: Science 4. The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept: d. Students know that stars are the source of light for all bright objects in outer space and that the Moon and planets shine by reflected sunlight, not by their own light. e. Students know the appearance, general composition, relative position and size, and motion of objects in the solar system, including planets, planetary satellites, comets, and asteroids. Common Core Range of Writing 8.W.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two). Conventions of Standard English 8.L.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. 8.L.2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Preparation: Set up class MacBooks, access to McGraw-Hill Online Quiz on Lesson 2 & 4, Wordle, Microsoft Word and class Wiki. Materials: MacBooks Microsoft Word Wiki access and accounts

McGraw-Hill Online Quiz access Projector Speakers Guided Instruction: Tell students they will be taking a three-part quiz today. The first two parts consist of an online quiz on Lesson 2: The Sun-Earth-Moon System and Lesson 4: Asteroids, Comets and Meteoroids. Show students how to access the links found in Chapter 11 resources, Day 10, http://glencoe.mcgrawhill.com/sites/0078741858/student_view0/unit4/chapter11/lesson2/ http://glencoe.mcgrawhill.com/sites/0078741858/student_view0/unit4/chapter11/lesson4/ Students should print out their results to hand in. The second part, which will take up most of the period, is a creative writing piece. Read over the directions for the writing piece: Write a letter to a friend, using Microsoft Word, about a total lunar eclipse you saw. Describe how the Moon looked as the eclipse progressed. Use words that would help your friend visualize the eclipse. Letter should include an introduction, a body, and a closing 1 page max When students are done writing they will create a Wordle, http://www.wordle.net of the writing piece and upload it to class Wiki. Show students an example of a Wordle on the website Play Gustav Holst- Mercury during class. Independent Activity: Students will first take two online quizzes (5 questions each), print the results and hand it in. Students will access Microsoft Word to start writing, copy paste to create a Wordle and upload the Wordle to the class Wiki http://www.wikispaces.com
