Topic
Monday We will finish our viewing of Invasion
of the Body Snatchers. We will also
look at the voice in expository writing.
We will look at argumentative
structure as used in Vowell’s The
Wordy Shipmates, and finally we will
discuss approaches to writing timed
essays.
Tuesday Finishing up our discussion of The
Crucible. How does this play help us
understand the issue of loyalty in
America? We will conduct some close,
textual analysis of the play, so please
be certain to have your copy with you.
Wednesday In class essay on The Crucible/ Red
Scare. Bring any class materials you
wish, as you can use them as sources
for your essay. But nothing can be pre-
written. After the test, we will also
refresh our memories, reviewing the
summer reading, Reservation Blues by
Sherman Alexie.
Thursday Our next unit: Boundary, Border,
Barrier. How do Americans define
these? How and when do our
definitions change? We’ll discuss the
unit’s final project, a task connecting
these concepts in relation to Native
American history.
Friday Icon Analysis: How have we / do we
view Native Americans? How have
these views changed? Who creates
and manipulates these views? To what

review our summer reading.

discuss a quote that—in your view—
presents a major theme, issue, or idea
within the novel. Please bring GML to
class tomorrow and Friday.

Finish reading GML on Native
Americans, pp. 520-528 and pp. 877-
878. Be prepared for a possible
