Analysing the 9/11 Address to the Nation

On September 11, 200,1 America was under attack. The Twin Towers and the Pentagon were struck by hijacked planes, forcing President George W. Bush to give the 9/11 Address to the Nation speech. This was the first time in history that the United States had been attacked.Earlier that day, George W. Bush had been fulfilling a very important obligation. He was at Emma T. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida preparing to read books to children. He had seen the attack happen but had not thought too much of it. Shortly after seeing the footage, Andrew Card whispered in his ear, the president looked a bit befuddled but he stayed put and kept reading to the children. Afterwards he gave a brief speech and was whisked off. After a full day of not knowing where President George W. Bush had been, when he gave his address, everyone was glued to their televisions. In his address it was made clear that the catastrophe that had just been thrust upon the United States was not going to sway the people, stating ...th ey cannot touch the foundation of America . The president directed this speech to those Americans that were affected mentally and physically by the attack to give them hope and reassurance. George W. Bushs speech understood the magnitude behind the whole situation so he used emotion and powerful diction to grasp his audience which was young and old.

Miller George W. Bush used an interesting layout for his speech, starting out with harsh words that brought back the fresh memories of The Twin Towers falling, dust and smoke rising, polluting the air and streets, debris everywhere; ending on a more somber note, using the gospel to give hope and comfort to the Americans. Starting his speech with a tough, strong, and immovable tone he captured his audiences attention . He began with pointing out important people from the morning, ...secretaries, business men and women, military and federal workers, moms and dads, friends and neighbors. All the many types of people whose ... lives were suddenly ended by evil, despic able acts of terror. President Bush knew before he would give his speech exactly what he could use to capture his audience, because of the circumstances behind the attack, having it be the first in American history, everyone was glued to their televisions and radios. He used the effect of pathos. The attack did not just affect the government but the United States as a whole. He knew many people would be hurting, so he took their emotions into account. By saying The pictures of airplanes, flying into buildings, fires burning, huge--huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. he was able to capture his audience and have them be behind him, and looking to him for guidance. There is also, not one time where George W. Bush put himself or the government first or above the American citizens.. George W. Bush, The president of the United States, said words that are strong and he strategically placed to bring back the memories that everyone wished had nt happened. He placed words such as deliberate, deadly, mass murder, and evil in the first paragraph of his speech to remind the people of that morning, he did not do to

Miller make them sad but to make it a point that [o]ur country is strong, no matt er what happens. Those words put a picture in the minds of the Americans that changed their lives forever. He used words that brought forward the anger that the americans had toward the attackers. The way he placed deliberate, deadly, and mass murder strategically impacted the audience. It was preparing them for what his speech was going to be about, the attack that was brought upon them. He also used the words we, us, our, to put the people first. For example he says, ...were the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world, [o]ur country is strong, ... on behalf of the American people, ...and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. Wanting to make sure that he was being heard and understood,, George W. Bush states, [w]e make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. George W. Bush used the power and authority of religion to bring another sense of comfort and strength to the American people. When bad things happen, Americans look for anything and everything to help and give them comfort. Most Americans that find themselves within a crisis religious or nonreligious, cling to the hope that there is a god. The most common form of comfort they seek comes from scripture, George W. Bush quoted Psalms 23, [e]ven though I walk the valley of the shadow of death ,I fear no evil for you are with me. That impacted deeply on the religious and even the non religious, they knew that they did not have to be scared because god would be there. He chose this quote especially because he knew how frail and fragile the Americans were. Anxiety flourishing, grasping for hope, the Americans look to president bush in search of comfort.

Miller President George W. Bush was the source that all the Americans and the rest of the world looked to. Wondering what he was going to say about the catastrophe and the fear that now plagued the United States, the Americans desperately seeked for his guidance and wisdom. George W. Bush was very concerned about the Americans and their health. By stating Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. he proved that he was not just concerned about the Americans but the rest of the world as well. President Bushs speech appealed to all those that listened because he put everyone except for himself first, which made his speech successful. September 11, 2001, is a day that is unforgettable. It was the first day in its history that America had been under attack. 3 planes was all it took. Two planes crashed into the two World Trade Center buildings bringing down the towering skyscrapers. The third plane crashed into the Pentagon in an attempt to weaken American and its defenses. President George W. Bush was the idol that brought hope and a sense of safety and security back to the United States. George W. Bush used the tactics of logos and pathos to make his speech successful. President Bush began his address to the nation with unwavering and strong words, and ended his speech on a more somber and hopeful note. He made it a point to put the American citizens and the rest of the world first before himself or the government.
