Lesson Plan Template

Name: John Byrd Class/Subject: History 10th Grade Date: January 23, 2014 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will be able to differentiate the plot of the movie and draw contrasts with the actual novel Students should also effectively work together in groups and be respectful to their classmates Students can be active watchers and be able to distinguish movie tricks that add to the plot of a movie. Content Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or opinions. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.2c Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts. Materials/Resources/Technology: TV DVD player Hamlet (1990) movie Loose-leaf paper for notes Teachers Goals: Students should be able to effectively justify their choices based upon evidence presented by the movie. The teacher should be able to have a safe environment where students can work together. Students can draw conclusions, compare and contrast how a plot and details are expressed as described by the teacher.

Start of Class: 5 min The teacher will discuss ask the students about what they expect to see in the movie discussion plot details, how characters may act etc. in comparison to the book. The teacher will write down the students responses on the board. The students do not need to take notes. Introduction of Lesson: 10 min The teacher will instruct the students to take out loose-leaf paper to jot down any differences they see in the movie in relation to the book. Bullet points or lists will do fine. Lesson Instruction: 30 min/day till movie is completed The teacher will turn on the movie and after every 30 minutes or at a cut scene when appropriate to pause the movie and allow students to jot down any notes and share ideas with their peers sitting around them. Assessments/ Check for Understanding: 10 min The teacher will at the end of each day ask what the students noticed in the film: plot details, how characters are shown, mood of setting, how light is shown etc. The teacher will ask the students to elaborate on why they chose that particular detail or add other comments of what the students didnt bring up in comparing movie and book. Closure/Wrap-up/Review: HW On the last day when viewing the movie is finished, the students will write a short paper, 2-3 paragraphs long describing what they like about their thoughts on film in comparison to the novel and what how did the film display the plot of hamlet with light, dialogue, props, moods, settings etc. This will be assigned for homework to be turned in the next day. Self-Assessment The teacher will evaluate the students discussion and analyze their papers that they wrote to see if the students were able to take the information from the movie watching and their previous knowledge on the novel to draw accurate similarities and contrasts, as well as understand how a plot can be displayed by movie tricks.
