Remarcabile sunt i decoraiunile interioare i exterioare, precum i amvonul cu sculpturi baroce.

A great historical and religious architectural monument, the church is one of the most imposing Gothic edifices from our country. It was built approximately between 1350 -1480, being the first hall church from Transylvania. The main portal, carved in 1444 in Gothic style, ends with a high accolade, showing in the central part the carved image of Archangel Michael. The tower from the north faade was built between 1834 and 1836 in neo-Gothic style and it is 80 meters high, including the cross. The inside and outside decorations and the baroque carved pulpit are also remarkable. An extraordinary execution is the Renaissance portal of the sacristy (1528) with Italian motifs and a strong south-German influence. The body of the pulpit, in baroque style, was carved by Johannes Nachtigall and Anton Schuhbauer. The mural picture, fragmentary kept, shows stylistic influences from northern Italy and reveals the first signs of the Renaissance in Cluj-Napoca paintings.

The Roman-Catholic Franciscan Monastery and Church

Muzeului Square

The Roman-Catholic Franciscan Monastery and Church in Cluj-Napoca is one of the oldest and most significant buildings in the city. Initially, in this place there was an old Roman-Catholic Church, the first one in Cluj, built in the 11th-12th centuries, but destroyed during the first invasion of the Tartars (1241). After its destruction, the place was rebuilt during 1260-1290 in a late Romanesque style and later rebuilt, in the 15th century, in Gothic style. With the banishing of the Catholic religious orders by the Protestants, in March 1556, the monastery building had no longer a religious use. Until 1557, Queen Isabella of Hungary lived in the building, and later the church was transformed into a school (Unitarian, since 1558). Since 1609, according to the wish of Prince Gabriel Bthory, the building was donated to the Calvinist-Reformed religion. The Franciscans returned to the city in 1728 and initiated a campaign to restore the church and tower, the main components in Baroque style. The church-monastery ensemble has three sides, around an inner courtyard open to the broken archways of the pavilions. Also here was a famous school that Nicolaus of Mirabilibus attended, later be coming a professor at the University of Florence. Inside the monastery there was a famous library of the Franciscans, which collection exceeded thousands of volumes. During 1906 and 1948, in the monastery, there was the printing house of Saint Bonaventura, where various religious magazines were printed (The Catholic World, The Holy Cross etc.)

The Transfiguration Greek-Catholic Cathedral, formerly known as the Church of the Monorits (The Roman-Catholic Church of the Franciscan order of the Miorits), was donated to the Romanian Church unified with Rome (GreekCatholic) in 1924 by the Vatican, to serve as a cathedral for the Greek-Catholic Diocese of Cluj-Gherla, when the bishopric seat was moved from Gherla to Cluj. The church was built in Baroque style, in the years 1775 and 1779, by the Roman-Catholic Order of the Minorites, on the site of the former Henter House, by the architect Francisc Kitner. The necessary money for the works came from a donation of the Empress Maria Theresa, also the Grand Princess of Transylvania. Due to a construction error, the church tower collapsed on September 22nd, 1779, making a human victim. Three years later, the tower and the faade were rebuilt, under the guidance of the architect Johann Eberhard Blaumann. The faade of the building was built after an artistic coherent program, in Baroque style, with a very strong jutty, curved towards the exterior of the building and tight to the corners of the faade. The interior of the building was adapted to the Byzantine religion and an iconostasis was placed inside. The colored glass windows from the 19 th century represent saints related to the history of the Franciscan order and the history of Hungary.

The Evangelical Church was built between 1816 and 1829 after the plans of the architect Georg Winkler and it harmoniously combines elements of Baroque and Neoclassical style. The building of the church lasted until 1829, with interruptions in 1822. For its building, materials from the demolition of the Circular Tower, located north of the tower gate of the December 21st 1989 Boulevard, were used. Along with the two main builders, the architect Georg Winkler and the carpenter Christian Kiermayer, the documents located in the churchs archive also mention the participation of several Cluj craftsmen. In the early 20th century there were several renovations of the church, the most important being the one done in 1914, when the architect Remnyik Kroly raised the churchs tower with 4 meters and arranged inside the tower an iron structure to support the bells. In its walls, stones from the Round Bastion were incorporated. On the faade appears the inscription PIETATI (RELIGIOUSNESS). The painting in the altar is the work of Johann Gentiluomo, and the organ of the church was built in 1913, by the Walker firm from Ludwigsburg.

Also called The Holly Trinity Church on the Hill, the Orthodox Church was built during 1795 and 1796, with the contribution of the Romanian craftsmen and townspeople in Cluj, and with the support of the Greek and the Macedonian merchants from Cluj and the Romanian merchants from Braov. The church was built on the west-east axis and is composed of a rectangular nave, a narrow space in front of the iconostasis, a semicircular apse inside and a polygonal apse outside. The porch is separated from the nave by three arches, of which the central one has an opening shaped as a basket handle, and the side arches have semicircular openings. The three arches continue at the first floor with a rail, decorated with a cornice at the top. The walls of the nave are flanked in the corners by massive pilasters, in different vertical planes. The definitive element of the church is the placing of the massive corner pillars in a 45 angle in relation to the walls of the nave, an element that turns the typology of the interior space in an octagonal one, specific to the Baroque style. In the interwar period, the church served as cathedral for the Diocese of Vad and Feleac, having in its collections precious objects of worship, among which The Liturgy from 1797.

After the death of Georg Winkler, Anton Kagerbauer became responsible with the finalization of the works, and he changed the plans for the faade and the towers. The plan of the church is a central one, according to the requirements of the Calvinist church, and the dimensions of the church are impressive: the length of the two naves is about 50 meters, and the central dome has a diameter of 12.6 meters and a height of 19.5 meters. The height of the towers is 40 meters. The total size of the church is 1750 square meters.

The Neolog Synagogue

The Neolog Synagogue is a place of worship also known as the Memorial Temple of the Hebrew Deportees. The Mosaic Neolog community was led by Rabbi Mtys Eisler, professor of Semitic languages at the University of Cluj. The Synagogue was built in Moorish style, after the plans of the railway engineer Izidor Hegner, and it was inaugurated in the late 19th century. In 1927, the building was severely damaged by the Legionnaires and it was later restored with the support of the Romanian State. During the Vienna Award (1940-1944), after the deportation of the Jews by the Hungarian troops in the Nazi camps, the Synagogue was, once again, damaged due to bombarding in the neighboring areas (June 2nd, 1944), and it was restored in 1951. The Synagogue is dedicated to the memory of the Holocaust victims.
