Equations with Variables on Both Sides

Review: Solving Equations (with a new technique) Sometimes it is easier to solve equations if we change everything to addition. Subtracting is the same as _____________________ a ___________________________.
a. c. e. 5 3 = 5 + (-3) = 2 4 10 = 4 + (-10) = -6 -3 8 = -3 + (-8) = -11 b. d. f. 12 6 = ______________ = ________ 7 8 = ______________ = ________ -9 10 = ______________ = ________

Lets try this technique with equations!

g.

10 = 6 y

h.

8 x = 10

i.

20 = 9 b

Now were ready for

variables on both sides

Imagine you have a scale that is balanced (both sides are equal). On the left side, you have 4 iphones and 5 nine-ounce weights. On the right side, you have 12 iphones and 7 one-ounce weights. Can you figure out how much one iphone weighs?

On the left side of a scale you have 6 apples and 2 pound weights. On the right side of the scale you have 3 apples and 3 pound weights. What does one apple weigh? (Assuming all apples are exactly the same weight!)

Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides
Check: 10x 2x 16 Add 2x to both sides.
? 10(2) 2(2) 16 ? 20 4 16

2-4

Variables must be collected on the same side of the equation before the equation can be solved.

Solve 10x 2x 16. 10x 2x 16 2x 2x 8x 16

8x 16 8 8

Divide both sides by 8.

? 20 20

x 2 1. 2 + 4b = 50 + 5b 2. 6 2a = 4a 6

3.

10 y 3 4y 13

4.
