Rationale for HTSB Standard 3: Learning Environment Artifact: Lesson Plan- Context and Motivation Co rse: E!

"#$- %ntrod ction to Classroom Management The artifact that fulfills the HTSB Standard 3: Learning Environment is the construction of a lesson plan based on context and motivation, which I developed in ED 285: Introduction To Classroom ana!ement" This assi!nment helped me appl# the $nowled!e of how I can brin! a diverse learnin! environment into the classroom throu!h the context of connectin! an# t#pe of lesson to students% prior $nowled!e and experiences and have them be motivated to learn within the content based upon effective en!a!ement strate!ies" &or the contextual aspect of the artifact, I chose to teach about cultural values because based on the ob'ectives in the lesson plan, students within the learnin! environment will be ma$in! friends with other classmates that are from a different ethnic or cultural bac$!round" I wanted students to be able to identif# and explain about ob'ects that represented certain cultures, such as the (awaiian lei that displa#s the values of love and connection, and then appl# that tas$ in findin! their own values represented throu!h either ob'ects or words" In terms of the motivational component, one of the steps within the introduction of the lesson plan was to show a scene from )ilo and *titch where +ani was sin!in! the son! ,loha -%e and then as$ students what the# thin$ the word .,loha/ means" 0ecause most children $now about the movie, this will help students to be able to connect with their own prior $nowled!e and experience" The reason wh# I believe this artifact represents (T*0 *tandard 1: )earnin! Environment is because it demonstrates that I can develop learning experiences that engage learners in collaborative and self-directed learning and that extend learner interaction with ideas and people locally and globally 3 b!" 2ithin the !uided practice, collaboration is what I believe to be an essential $e# to this lesson because it allows students to share their different practices thus communicatin! information about the cultural ideas of different peoples both locall# and internationall#" ,lso because the lesson deals with culture, it also demonstrates m# modelin! of fostering respectf#l comm#nication among all members of the learning comm#nity 3 $!" 0ecause part of this lesson has students sharin! their cultural values to the class, one of the ob'ectives that I communicated is for students to ma$e respectful informed 'ud!ments based onl# on the evidence that is presented b# a classmate%s artifacts and chosen words" This topic is a hard one to teach without !ettin! an#one in the classroom offended and it

is important for me as a teacher and as a role model to be a !ood example in developin! open mindedness and respect amon! a diverse learnin! environment"
