Why use self assessment?

There are a number of methods that can be used to assess performance as identified within the learning materials. Self assessment is a common practice within many organisations however is it effective? Why use self assessment? Self assessment allows the individual to reflect on their performance over a period of time. It provides the opportunity to determine what has been successful, what has not been successful and why? What could be improved in the future? If the individual is involved within the assessment process then he/she is more likely to cooperate and actively engage with improvements.
